She emphasized that the objective must be to “overcome blockades” and enhance the organization’s efficiency, such as by merging agencies, increasing local staffing, and utilizing AI.
“There is significant financial pressure on this organization, making it clear that we must urgently determine what the U.N.’s core areas truly are,” Baerbock stated.
Regarding who will succeed Secretary-General António Guterres, Baerbock suggested that a woman should lead the U.N. An organization dedicated to women’s and human rights “has not managed to have a woman at its helm in 80 years,” she observed, which is “no longer appropriate.”
Concerning the U.S.’s role in the organization, Baerbock stated she continues to see strong and essential support for multilateralism despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertive America First agenda.
It is vital, she added, that major powers take responsibility and “do not call the Charter into question.” The U.N. remains “the place where controversies must be addressed” and “solutions developed.”
