Imprisoned Journalists Awarded This Year’s Sakharov Prize

Strasbourg – The EU’s highest human rights accolade has been awarded by the European Parliament to imprisoned journalists from Belarus and Georgia.

Polish-Belarusian Andrzej Poczobut and Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli were recognized by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

Metsola declared in the Strasbourg chamber, “Their bravery has made them symbols of the struggle for freedom and democracy,” while announcing this year’s recipients of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

Poczobut was detained in Belarus in 2021 and was sentenced to eight years in prison two years later. Amaglobeli was arrested in Georgia in January and has received a two-year prison sentence.

The Sakharov Prize, named after Soviet nuclear physicist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Andrei Sakharov, has been presented since 1988. Last year, it was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who also received the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
