Thessaloniki (Greece) – On Wednesday, Greek authorities arrested thirty-seven individuals on charges related to a “massive and systematic” fraud involving European Union agricultural subsidies and money laundering activities, as reported by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation focuses on dubious subsidies linked to, among other things, pastures situated on archaeological sites, olive groves at a military airport, and banana plantations on Mount Olympus.
The arrests occurred “in several regions,” with 43 additional individuals currently sought, some believed to be overseas, according to Greek police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou on the ERT channel.
Funds fraudulently obtained by individuals, who were not always farmers, were reportedly used for purchasing “luxury goods, travel, and vehicles,” according to the Luxembourg-based European Public Prosecutor’s Office. (October 22, 2025)
