Bulgarian Orthodox Old-Style Church Erased by Sofia Court of Appeal

The Sofia Court of Appeal has initiated proceedings to liquidate and remove the Bulgarian Orthodox Old-Style Church from the register of religious denominations after a year of litigation. This decision follows the Sofia City Court’s prior refusal to terminate its registration and is based on recent changes to the Law on Religious Denominations, driven by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church to prevent potential schisms within the Orthodox community. These changes, supported by the government, the president, and parliamentary parties GERB, “Vazrazhdane,” and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, stipulate that no religious denomination, other than the Bulgarian Orthodox Church – Bulgarian Patriarchate, can use the word “Orthodox” or its derivatives. Denominations were given two months to amend their names and statutes accordingly, which the Bulgarian Orthodox Old-Style Church failed to do. Consequently, the court approved the request from the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office and the Directorate of Religious Denominations of the Council of Ministers to remove it from the register.

This legal issue started in December when the Supreme Court of Cassation allowed the Bulgarian Orthodox Old-Style Church’s registration based on a European Court of Human Rights ruling. A year later, Bulgarian law removed the Church, which consists of 18 locations and followers nationwide. The decision by the Sofia Court of Appeal is final and not subject to appeal.

In contrast, the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church, registered under that name and operating ten local branches, has not faced similar actions. On October 1, 2025, the central denomination in Sofia changed its name to “Armenian Apostolic Holy Church in Bulgaria,” with local branches making similar changes in the preceding month, such as the “Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church of Surp Agop in Yambol,” now registered as “Armenian Apostolic Holy Church of Surp Agop.”

Looks like the Bulgarian Orthodox Old-Style Church just got a one-way ticket to oblivion, courtesy of the Sofia court—guess the government’s not very fond of the “oldies” anymore, eh? 🥴 Who knew being “Orthodox” was such a trendy title?

  2. Oh, splendid! Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the Sofia Court of Appeal decides to play religious musical chairs. 🎭 Who needs diversity when you can have a monopoly on orthodoxy, eh? Cheers to that! 🍷

  3. Seems like the Bulgarian Orthodox Old-Style Church just got the royal boot from the registry—guess they didn’t get the memo about the ‘exclusive club’ for Orthodoxy. 😂 But hey, at least they can still enjoy a good cup of coffee while they ponder their next move, right?☕️

  4. Just what we needed, a court throwing out a church like last week’s expired yogurt. Can’t wait to see what they come up with next—maybe a law against using “Orthodox” in a crossword puzzle? 🤷‍♂️🥴

Looks like the Sofia Court just decided that “Old-Style” means “out of style” – who knew religious branding could be so trendy? 🙄✌️

Isn’t it charming how the courts have found time to erase a whole church while there are still potholes in Sofia big enough to swallow a car? 🤷‍♂️ Only in Bulgaria can you get a masterclass in bureaucracy while sipping on a lukewarm coffee. ☕️

Seems like the Bulgarian Orthodox Old-Style Church just got a one-way ticket to the history books, courtesy of the Sofia Court of Appeal! 🤷‍♂️ I guess there’s only room for one “Orthodox” in this town, and it’s not the little guy on the block.

Seems like the Bulgarian Orthodox Old-Style Church got the boot faster than a cab driver on a rainy day—who knew “Orthodox” was such a hot potato? 🍟🙃

  9. Seems like the Bulgarian Orthodox Old-Style Church thought they could pull a fast one, but the court’s got a real knack for keeping things tidy, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Guess they should’ve had a better lawyer or maybe just learned how to play the game better. 🏛️

Just what we needed, right? A court decision to wipe away a piece of cultural heritage, because clearly, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church couldn’t handle a little competition. 🙄 #GeniusMove

Just when you thought religious freedom was a given, the Sofia Court of Appeal pulls a fast one! 😏 Who knew “Orthodox” was a trademark? Next, they’ll be charging royalties for using “amen.”
