China Conducted ‘Large-Scale Espionage Operations’ Against UK, Top Official Warned in Collapsed Spy Case

Christopher Cash, 30, a former researcher for a Conservative MP, and Christopher Berry, 33, a teacher, both denied allegations of passing sensitive information to an alleged Chinese intelligence agent between 2021 and 2023. The Crown Prosecution Service unexpectedly dropped charges against them last month, leading to political backlash.

The director of public prosecutions in the U.K. stated the case fell apart because evidence was not obtained from the government regarding China as a national security threat. The opposition Conservatives, who were in power when the men were charged in April 2024, have criticized the current Labour government, accusing it of being “too weak to stand up to Beijing on a crucial matter of national security.”

In a rare move, the government published three witness statements provided by Collins to the CPS between December 2023 and August 2025.

In the most recent statement, Collins claimed that Chinese intelligence services are “highly capable and conduct large scale espionage operations against the UK to advance the Chinese state’s interests and harm the interests and security of the UK. China’s espionage operations threaten the UK’s economic prosperity and resilience, and the integrity of our democratic institutions.”

However, Collins also stressed that the U.K. government aims for a “positive” relationship with Beijing. Its stance is to “co-operate where we can; compete where we need to; and challenge where we must, including on issues of national security,” he stated.

Just brilliant, innit? We can’t quite catch the spies, but we’re all for a “positive” relationship with our snooping friends from China! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “we’ve got it all under control” like throwing a spy case out the window while trying to keep the tea party with Beijing going. Just a bit of classic British diplomacy, right? 🍵😏

  3. Blimey, sounds like we’ve got a real thriller on our hands—espionage, political drama, and a government that thinks playing nice with the dragon will keep it from breathing fire. 🍵 Who knew diplomacy involved so much peekaboo with national security? 😂

Brilliant! So, we’re getting spied on by the Chinese while we aim for a “positive” relationship? 🤔 Classic UK diplomacy—nothing says friendship like a side of espionage, eh?

  5. Just brilliant, innit? We’re all set to have a lovely cuppa with our “friends” in Beijing while they’re busy playing hide and seek with our secrets. ☕️🕵️‍♂️

Oh brilliant, nothing says “trust us” like a government scrambling to play nice with the very folks they accuse of spying! 😂 Guess it’s all about keeping the tea party civil, even when the kettle’s about to boil over, innit? ☕️

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like cozying up to a nation that’s allegedly plotting our downfall while also wanting “a positive relationship.” Cheers to diplomacy! 🍵🇬🇧

  8. Classic British diplomacy, innit? A bit like inviting the fox into the henhouse for tea, all while pretending the feathers won’t fly! 😂

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a bit of espionage to spice up the UK-China relationship, eh? 🤔 I suppose we’ll just keep on “co-operating” while they’re busy taking notes on our national secrets – what a fine strategy!

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a bit of espionage to spice up the old political tea party, eh? Just shows how hard it is to find a decent spy these days, must be all that competition from the takeaway menus! 🍜😂

You’d think with all this spying, the Chinese would at least offer us a cuppa or a biscuit, right? 🤷‍♂️ But no, let’s just keep playing nice while they’re in our backyard like it’s a game of hide and seek. 🍵📉

A right mess, isn’t it? One moment we’re dodging spies in the shadows, and the next, our government’s busy playing nice with the very folks who might be listening in on our tea parties. Classic British diplomacy, mate! 😂

  13. Lovely, isn’t it? Just when you thought spy novels were fiction, the UK serves up a real-life thriller with a side of diplomatic tea. 🍵 #OnlyInBritain

Oh, splendid! Nothing like a bit of espionage to spice up the tea and crumpets, eh? 🍵 But don’t worry, mate, the UK government’s just keeping things “positive” with a side of national security threats – classic British understatement! 😂

Seems like our top officials have decided to play peek-a-boo with national security, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Can’t wait to see how “positive” our relationship with Beijing becomes while they’re busy pinching our secrets! 😂

Nothing says “strong leadership” like dropping a spy case faster than a British summer shower! 😂 Honestly, who knew keeping an eye on your tea was more important than national security? 🍵💼

Oh, brilliant! So we’re just going to “co-operate” with the folks who are apparently feeding us state secrets like it’s a casual tea party? 🫖 What a lovely strategy – I can’t wait for the next chapter of “How to Win Friends and Influence Spies”! 😏

Seems like the UK government’s strategy is to play a game of chess with China while they’re busy playing checkers in the park. 🤷‍♂️ Good luck getting a checkmate when half your pieces are in the opponent’s pocket! 🐉💼

  19. Isn’t it charming how the UK government wants a “positive” relationship with a nation that’s conducting large-scale espionage? 😂 Sounds like a classic case of “let’s be best mates while you pickpocket my wallet!”

So, let me get this straight: we’re getting spied on, yet we’re still looking to have a “positive” relationship? Brilliant strategy, mate! Just what we need, more tea with the folks who are pinching our secrets! ☕️😂
