Orbán Rival Magyar Accuses Várhelyi of ‘Withholding Full Truth’ in Hungarian Spy Affair

Magyar, who presently leads Orbán in polls ahead of April’s parliamentary election, stated in a Facebook post: “Olivér Várhelyi, the current EU Commissioner and former EU Ambassador (and my former boss), did not fully disclose the truth when he denied this during the recent official investigation.”

Várhelyi was Hungary’s ambassador to the EU from 2015 to 2019, having previously served as deputy ambassador from 2011. Magyar was part of the Brussels permanent representation office from 2011 to 2015.

POLITICO reached out to several of Várhelyi’s team members about Magyar’s claims but received no reply.

Magyar also implicated Hungarian government minister János Lázár in his Facebook post, mentioning it was “known” that secret service agents were sent to Brussels during Lázár’s tenure overseeing EU affairs from 2012 to 2018.

Lázár did not comment on Magyar’s post but was quoted in the Hungarian media as saying: “I don’t recall the specifics—my memory isn’t great—but it is my responsibility to safeguard my country.”

“If Hungarian intelligence was deployed to Brussels, I would commend them, not criticize them,” he said, adding: “Their duty is to defend the nation’s interests… Their role is to ensure the country’s independence.”

Seems like we’ve got a classic case of “he said, she said” but with a side of spy drama. Maybe next, they’ll launch a reality show—“Keeping Up with the KGBs”? 😂

Seems like we’ve got a classic case of “who’s lying better” in the Hungarian political circus. 🤡 Maybe next, they’ll hold a talent show instead of an election—at least that would be entertaining!

  3. Oh, look, a classic case of “who’s more truthful in the land of spies.” 🤔 With all the cloak-and-dagger action, I half-expect a sequel to James Bond set in Budapest! 🍷

Oh, just another day in Hungary’s political soap opera—where the truth is as elusive as a decent cup of coffee in a motorway service station. 🍵📉 Can’t wait for the next episode; I’m sure it’ll be a blockbuster!

Seems like honesty in politics is as rare as a sunny day in London—just ask Várhelyi, who clearly thinks “full truth” is a bit too ambitious for this season. 😂 Typical, innit?

Seems like the only thing more elusive than the truth in this spy saga is a politician with a clear memory. 🤔 Perhaps Lázár should consider a career in storytelling—he’s certainly got the drama down! 😂

Seems like the truth in Hungary is as elusive as a decent cup of coffee at a petrol station. Maybe Várhelyi thought ‘full disclosure’ was just a suggestion, eh? ☕️😏

Seems like Várhelyi’s idea of “full disclosure” is about as clear as a pint of cloudy lager—just when you think you’ve got it, there’s always a little something extra left at the bottom 🍺. But hey, who needs transparency when you’ve got a good old-fashioned game of political hide and seek? 😂

Typical Hungarian politics, isn’t it? Just a casual game of “who can dodge the truth better” – should we call it a sport yet? 🤷‍♂️

Seems like we’ve got a classic case of “I didn’t do it, but if I did, I’d have a great excuse!” 😏 The political drama in Hungary is like a soap opera—plenty of plot twists and always a cliffhanger!

Typical Hungarian drama, innit? 🤷‍♂️ Just another day in the parliament circus, where withholding the ‘full truth’ is practically a national sport! 🍿

  12. Well, isn’t this a delightful game of ‘Who’s Telling the Truth?’ 🤔 Seems like Magyar’s just trying to turn a spy thriller into a political soap opera. Classic! 🍿
