Slovak President: The European Union is Undermining Trust Among the People in North Macedonia

Bratislava/Skopje – Peter Pellegrini, President of the Slovak Republic, has expressed concerns that the European Union is undermining public trust in North Macedonia by imposing new requirements for its accession. This statement followed his meeting with North Macedonia’s President, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, in Skopje. Pellegrini emphasized that EU integration should not be misused for “international disputes or political grievances,” according to a TASR correspondent.

“The European Union is risking the trust of the people in this region, and failing to show that the enlargement process remains active would be a significant error,” he asserted. Pellegrini highlighted the potential for North Macedonia to engage in “intensive negotiations” and implement necessary reforms to meet EU entry criteria in the coming years.

Slovakia firmly supports North Macedonia and is committed to assisting in the integration process.

He noted that the security of the Union is closely linked to its expansion and reaffirmed Slovakia’s unwavering support for North Macedonia, pledging assistance in the integration process “in every possible way.” Pellegrini elaborated that Slovakia is providing financial support for integration efforts through UNDP development projects and by contributing its diplomats and specialized experts to advisory teams in the EU accession negotiations.

Economic ties are also a focal point of cooperation. During the visit, State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Economy, Vladimír Šimoňák, signed a memorandum of economic cooperation with North Macedonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Timčo Mucunský.

The President emphasized that the EU accession process should strictly adhere to established criteria. “No nation should exploit this process to resolve its own issues, effectively holding another country hostage or using it as leverage by imposing additional conditions,” he stated.

Pellegrini expressed confidence that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen would deliver a “clear signal” during her visit to Skopje on Wednesday (October 15) regarding the EU’s commitment to North Macedonia’s integration. “I hope she will provide a clear perspective on where your remarkable country belongs, as we believe it is part of the European Union family,” he remarked.

Gordana Siljanovska-Davková reiterated that the EU enlargement process should be exclusively based on meeting agreed-upon criteria, asserting that North Macedonia’s actions are “fully aligned with the Union’s requirements.”

The two-day official visit of the Slovak president to North Macedonia follows his recent trips to other Western Balkan nations, aimed at supporting the region’s candidate countries in their EU integration efforts. During the visit, he honored the legacy of notable Macedonian revolutionary and freedom fighter Goce Delčev in a commemorative act and met with Prime Minister Christijan Mickoski and Speaker of Parliament Afrim Gashi. Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a good ol’ EU lecture on trust from a chap who probably thinks “integration” means getting a latte with his croissant. 🍵🥐

Looks like the EU is playing hard to get with North Macedonia—who knew trust issues could be so fashionable? 🤷‍♂️ One can only hope Ursula has a few nice words to smooth things over; after all, what’s politics without a sprinkle of drama, eh? 😏

  3. Nothing like the EU playing hard to get with North Macedonia, right? It’s almost as if they think trust is a game of musical chairs—good luck finding a seat at the table! 😂🇸🇰

Seems like the EU is playing a game of trust fall, but forgot to catch the folks in North Macedonia. Who knew integration could feel more like a bad episode of a soap opera? 😂

Seems like the EU is playing a game of “trust fall” – only they’re the ones falling flat on their faces. 🤦‍♂️ North Macedonia must be thrilled to be on this rollercoaster, eh? 🌀

  6. Seems like the EU is playing a fun game of “let’s see how far we can push North Macedonia before they snap.” 🤷‍♂️ But hey, who needs trust when you’ve got bureaucratic hurdles to jump over, right? 😂

Typical EU move, innit? Just when you think the Balkans are getting a fair shake, they throw a curveball and remind everyone that trust is as rare as a sunny day in London! 😏

Isn’t it just delightful how the EU manages to turn trust into a game of musical chairs? 🎶 One minute you’re in, the next you’re out, all while the officials sip their espresso and muse over ‘criteria’. Classic!

Typical EU, always ready to sprinkle a bit of bureaucracy on folks just trying to join the club. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next time they’ll throw in a complimentary guide on how to navigate trust issues while waiting for an invitation to the family dinner! 🍽️

  10. Looks like the EU is really nailing it again, eh? Just what North Macedonia needed—more hoops to jump through while trying to join the family; who knew being part of Europe was a game of Twister? 🤷‍♂️

Looks like the EU is playing a game of “trust me, I’m a politician” with North Macedonia—classic move, eh? 🤔 Maybe they think the folks there are just waiting for another round of bureaucratic hoops to jump through! 🏃‍♂️💨

Oh sure, because nothing says “trust” like a EU membership application riddled with red tape and political maneuvering. Maybe they should just send a postcard instead—much less hassle! 😏✈️

Looks like the EU is doing a splendid job of playing hard to get with North Macedonia; nothing says “we value you” quite like an endless list of conditions, right? 😂

Typical EU move, innit? It’s like saying “let’s play nice” while handing out a list of chores longer than my tax return! 😂

  15. Seems like the EU’s strategy is all about trust—like giving a cat a bath and expecting it to purr. Good luck with that, Peter! 😏🛁
