Luxembourg – Earlier this year, the Swedish government urged the EU to expedite the return of individuals to Syria. Now, they believe it is time to focus on Afghanistan, calling on the EU Commission to develop a plan for the repatriation of individuals without valid asylum claims.
“We need to find solutions to ensure that forced returns are effectively implemented. If someone comes to Sweden and commits a crime, they should face deportation,” stated Migration Minister Johan Forssell, who addressed the issue at an EU meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday.
The EU previously had a return agreement with Afghanistan prior to the Taliban’s resurgence in 2021. Forssell is now advocating for measures such as joint EU charter flights to facilitate the return of the growing number of Afghans deemed ineligible for asylum in Europe.
The meeting also covers updated EU regulations regarding the procedures for returning individuals lacking the right to reside. There is ongoing debate about whether the recognition of deportation decisions from other EU countries should be mandatory or voluntary.
