UN releases $11 million for Gaza aid as ceasefire, hostage release bring ‘fragile hope’

The allocation, announced on Monday by Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, will aid in the immediate expansion of operations across the Gaza Strip, providing food, water, healthcare, and shelter for civilians impacted by two years of conflict. This follows a $9 million allocation last week for securing fuel supplies for hospitals and essential services, bringing total CERF funding for Gaza to $20 million.

The announcement coincides with a ceasefire brokered by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt remaining in place, and the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees, which the UN Secretary-General described as “the fragile hope of calm after months of devastation.”

Urgent scale-up required

The UN and partners are rapidly enhancing operations across Gaza with improved access, delivering life-saving assistance to previously isolated areas. However, substantial funding increases are necessary due to overwhelming needs.

Mr. Fletcher emphasized that without new contributions to CERF, essential aid cannot continue reaching those in need. Speaking from Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, before a Gaza summit, he referred to the UN humanitarian scale-up as occurring during “a moment of precarious hope.”

“It is a moment of opportunity but also one requiring determined patience, creativity, and sustained generosity,” he stated.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN teams have secured Israeli approval for 190,000 metric tonnes of aid, with cooking gas entering Gaza for the first time since March and more food, tents, and medical supplies arriving daily.
