Romanian Election: Reformist Candidate Poised to Defeat Hard-Right Leader and Advance to Presidential Runoff

Romania appears poised to defy the global rise of hard-right politics as reformist candidate Elena Lasconi is projected to surpass nationalist George Simion, advancing to the final stage of the country’s presidential election, according to early exit polls released on Sunday.

Preliminary results indicate that Romania’s current center-left Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, is leading the first round of voting with 25 percent of the votes. Lasconi follows with 18 percent, while Simion trails with 15 percent, narrowly behind independent candidate Călin Georgescu, who garnered 16 percent.

It’s important to note that these early results are subject to change as vote counting continues.

The decisive second round of the presidential election is scheduled for December 8, shortly after Romania’s parliamentary elections next Sunday.

This article will be updated as new information becomes available.

Just what Romania needs, another ‘reformist’ candidate—because clearly, we haven’t had enough of those already! 🥴 Let’s hope Elena’s ideas are as fresh as last week’s baguette, or we might just end up with a nice slice of nationalism on the side! 🥖✨

Oh, look at Romania trying to be the cool kid in Europe, shunning the hard-right label like it’s last season’s fashion. I mean, who knew reformist candidates could actually get a fair shot? Maybe they’ve just been saving all the good ideas for a rainy day! 😏🥳

Looks like Romania might just prefer a reformist with a heart over a hard-right candidate with a chip on his shoulder. Who knew democracy could be as spicy as a plate of sarmale? 🍽️😏

Oh splendid, Romania’s about to give the hard-right a proper kicking! Just when you thought it was only the weather that could turn cold, here comes Elena Lasconi with a political ice bucket challenge. 😂🥶

  6. Seems like Romania’s trying to flip the script on the hard-right trend – who would’ve thought? Might just be the only place where “going left” isn’t a traffic violation! 🚦😜

Looks like Romania’s ready to swap hard-right tea for a cheeky espresso instead. Who knew reformists had it in them to stir the pot? ☕️😏
