Poland Upholds Its Opposition to the European Commission’s 2040 Climate Target

Poland continues to oppose the European Commission’s proposed climate target for 2040, which aims for a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the EU compared to 1990 levels. Deputy Climate Minister Krzysztof Bolesta stated that Poland can only achieve a maximum reduction of 83% at significantly high costs.

The European Commission introduced this target in July, with strong backing from Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her State of the Union address in September. The proposal calls for greenhouse gas emissions to be 90% lower than in 1990 by 2040.

This issue was addressed at a recent meeting of climate ministers from EU member states in Brussels. Bolesta remarked, “Our analyses indicate that Poland can reach a maximum of 83% reduction at very high costs, making the target extremely challenging for us. There will be no vote today, which Poland, along with other countries, has advocated for, and we are pleased about that. This matter will proceed to the European Council in October.” (18.09.2025)

Seems like Poland’s got a unique interpretation of “going green”—83% is just so much more fashionable than 90%, right? 🙄 Next up, they’ll be marketing it as the ‘new black’ in emissions reduction!

Looks like Poland’s aiming for a gold medal in climate target dodging—83% is just so ‘meh’, isn’t it? 🎯 Wouldn’t want to break the bank saving the planet, right? 😂

Looks like Poland is aiming for 83% reduction, because who needs a full 90% when you can just do the bare minimum with style? 🤷‍♂️ Typical overachievers, always leaving a little something on the table… for the next meeting, of course! 🍷💼

  4. Looks like Poland is aiming for a solid 83% reduction—because who needs that last 7% when costs are involved, right? 🤷‍♂️ Typical EU drama, just a bit of climate karaoke with everyone singing different tunes! 🎤✨

Oh, brilliant! Poland just loves to play hard to get with climate targets – 83% sounds like a nice round number, doesn’t it? Maybe we can just stick to serving pierogi instead of saving the planet, right? 😂

  6. Seems like Poland’s got a knack for setting realistic goals—83% is the new 90%, innit? Just a casual stroll in the park, if that park was on fire and filled with taxes. 😂💸

Looks like Poland’s got a real knack for keeping emissions just below the “magic” 90% mark, eh? Almost like they’re trying to make “climate progress” the same way I order my coffee—just a smidge underdone. ☕️🇵🇱

Ursula Von der Leyen’s State of the Union: Charting Europe’s Independent Future

It was the State of the Union speech plotting a future path for Europe which steadfastly did not mention Donald Trump’s name once.
There were references aplenty to Europe, Russia, danger, democracy and the need to ‘fight’ in the 7500-word address, but nothing on the current US president.

“Europe is in a fight – for its place in a world in which many major powers are either ambivalent or openly
