Metsola Commends Costa’s Leadership in the European Council and Denounces Interference

Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, commended former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa for his exemplary leadership at the European Council, highlighting his serious approach to his role and dismissing any claims of power interference in international European representation. In an interview with Lusa and other agencies during the plenary session in Strasbourg, she stated, “I have been collaborating with President Costa for a long time, since his tenure as Prime Minister, and his management of the European Council is outstanding.”
She continued, “He takes his responsibilities seriously, which is appreciated by the heads of government and state within the European Council. They value having someone they can collaborate with, especially someone who has experience in this Parliament, having been a member and vice-president, and understands the institutional dynamics.”
When asked about criticisms regarding the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen representing the EU at high diplomatic levels instead of António Costa, Metsola disagreed with the notion of any power interference. There are concerns in Brussels regarding why von der Leyen occasionally takes on this role, particularly highlighted during diplomatic discussions in Washington last August concerning a ceasefire in Ukraine.
“Just last week, I had breakfast with all the ambassadors. My foundational experience is with the Council, where I spent a decade, and I can assure you that the atmosphere is positive, it is functioning well, and is under effective management,” Metsola remarked to Lusa and other European Newsroom agencies. “That is clear and evident,” she concluded.
António Costa commenced his two-and-a-half-year term as President of the European Council on December 1, 2024, marking him as the first socialist and Portuguese to hold this position. Ursula von der Leyen, of the center-right, began her second term at the helm of the EU executive in December and is set to deliver her first speech on the State of the Union for the new legislature this Wednesday, marking the fifth such address in her European journey.
The President of the European Council is currently visiting EU Member States until the end of next week to discuss the war in Ukraine, the community budget, and trade partnerships.

  1. Looks like Costa’s got the EU Council gig down to a fine art, eh? Who knew serious leadership came with a side of diplomatic drama? 😂

Seems like Roberta’s really got a soft spot for Costa, huh? Must be the serious face that does it—nothing says “leadership” like a good breakfast with ambassadors. 😂🍽️

Seems like Costa’s leadership is so top-notch that even the EU’s friendly neighborhood bureaucrats are taking notes. Who knew serious management could be a thing in this circus? 🤡💼

Looks like Costa’s doing such a stellar job that even the Brussels sprouts are applauding. Who knew leading the EU could be this much fun? 😂

  5. Typical, isn’t it? The only thing more impressive than Costa’s leadership is how quickly Metsola dismisses any hint of drama in the Council. Must be nice having breakfast with ambassadors while the rest of us are just trying to figure out the coffee machine ☕️.

Looks like Costa’s got the whole EU juggling act down to a fine art – who knew managing a council could be so easy? 😏 Meanwhile, von der Leyen’s off playing diplomat while we’re all here wondering if the coffee in Strasbourg is as strong as their debates.

Sure, Costa’s leadership is like a Bosch washing machine – reliable but still needs a good spin to clear out the dirty laundry! 🤷‍♂️ Just hope he doesn’t get too comfy at the top; we wouldn’t want him to start thinking he’s the *big cheese* or something. 🧀

  8. Looks like Costa’s got the EU Council in his pocket while von der Leyen plays musical chairs with diplomacy. Who knew running the Euro show could be this easy? 😂 #JustAnotherDayInBrussels

  9. So, Metsola thinks Costa’s doing a bang-up job—who knew turning up on time for meetings was all it took to impress the big wigs? 🤷‍♂️ Just wait till he starts solving world hunger at the next summit! 🍽️

Can’t imagine why anyone would think there’s any power tussle in the EU when we’ve got Costa running the show, right? 😏 It’s not like we’ve seen this kind of drama before—oh wait, yes we have! 🍷

Well, isn’t that just grand? A socialist leading the charge in the EU, while the rest of us mere mortals are left wondering if we’ve stumbled into a political comedy or a serious meeting—maybe it’s both! 😏

  12. Costa’s leadership? Blimey, if ‘taking responsibilities seriously’ was an Olympic sport, he’d be a gold medalist—if only that translated to actual results, eh? 🍷😏

Oh, brilliant! A former PM gets a gold star for just doing his job, while we all sit here waiting for someone to lift the heavy lifting of diplomacy. Must be nice to be in the “serious leadership” club, eh? 😏
