The Orthodox Church in the Czech Republic is experiencing significant financial challenges. Czech Television has initiated enforcement actions due to unpaid fees, and the financial administration has seized its headquarters in Prague’s Dejvice district over tax debts.
Odkryto.cz reports that a bailiff is demanding 11,000 crowns (451 EUR) from the church. The original debt to Czech Television was 2,500 crowns (102 EUR). Radek Konecny, a Czech Television spokesman, confirmed that the tax debt exceeds 1.2 million crowns (49,000 EUR), related to unpaid social security for church employees. Other church properties, including one with a hotel and restaurant in Prague’s center, are also facing seizure and enforcement actions.
Church spokesman Tomas Jarolim stated the television debt has been settled and the tax debt is being addressed.
The Orthodox Church is also struggling to pay its clergy. Odkryto.cz revealed that priests did not receive their July salaries in August.
The Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia comprises 3 dioceses in the Czech Republic and 2 in Slovakia, where most followers are. The Primate is Metropolitan Rostislav of Prešov, Slovakia.
