Brussels – The EU’s conservative political faction plans to collaborate with the far right to expedite the passage of the first EU list of “safe countries” for asylum purposes.
This list aims to allow EU member states to process asylum applications more swiftly, as individuals from these designated countries typically have minimal grounds for claiming asylum.
The EU Commission has proposed seven countries: Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kosovo, Morocco, and Tunisia. As the EU Parliament prepares to tackle this matter, Swedish politician Tomas Tobé of the Moderates, representing the conservative EPP group, is advocating for prompt backing.
Tobé is open to negotiating with far-right factions to secure the necessary support.
“I recognize there is already pushback from the Social Democrats concerning nations like Tunisia, but I am prepared to rally the majority needed in the European Parliament. We must implement a much more effective migration policy,” Tobé stated.
Reports indicate that EU member states in the Council of Ministers are in favor of the proposed seven-country list. A decision is anticipated by the end of this year or early 2026.
