A Commission spokesperson informed POLITICO that the delegation will be led by David O’Sullivan, the EU’s sanctions envoy.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU’s 19th package of sanctions against Russia, aimed at bringing President Putin to the negotiation table, would be revealed in early September.
Ukraine and its allies have consistently urged the U.S. to implement similar stringent sanctions on Moscow to weaken Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war resources.
Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a two-week deadline for the Kremlin to halt its invasion of Ukraine or face “massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both,” but he has not yet acted on the threat.
The Republican president imposed steep 50 percent tariffs on India as punishment for purchasing Russian oil, but the White House has not yet supported the 500 percent secondary tariffs on Moscow’s trading partners proposed by U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.
