Peking/Bratislava – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) expressed disappointment in a video address on social media on Wednesday regarding the absence of high-ranking representatives from EU member states at the 80th anniversary celebrations marking the end of World War II in Beijing, China. He characterized the event, which concluded with a military parade, as a “global event,” according to TASR.
“Chinese President Xi Jinping clearly stated that the world is at a crossroads between peace and war and that China is prepared to play a crucial role in establishing a new global peace framework. It is undeniable that even those most ideologically opposed to China cannot ignore its extensive global influence,” stated Robert Fico in his address.
He reiterated his disappointment regarding the absence of top EU officials at such a significant global occasion.
“If they believed they could isolate the Chinese commemoration of World War II victory, they greatly misjudged the situation, as it was the EU that ended up isolated today,” Fico remarked.
The Prime Minister noted that while his visit to Beijing lasts just two days, he is making every effort to maximize interactions with heads of state from numerous countries worldwide. In his video, Fico also mentioned his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday (September 2), which he plans to discuss with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a scheduled meeting on Friday (September 5).
Fico informed the public that he had informal discussions with “about ten presidents” on Wednesday, covering past engagements and planning future collaborative efforts. He mentioned that he and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko agreed on the importance of organizing a joint meeting to explore economic cooperation opportunities. During Wednesday’s official agenda, Fico talked with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong about preparations for his forthcoming official visit to Vietnam, and with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić regarding trade relations, the upcoming World Expo 2026 in Serbia, and the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Prime Minister is set to hold an official meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vice President Han Zheng on Thursday (September 4) in Beijing. (September 3)
“If they thought that they could isolate the Chinese celebrations of victory in World War II this way, they miscalculated greatly, because if anyone was isolated today, it was the EU.” Robert Fico.
