Millions of Citizens Urge European Financial Aid for Safe Abortion Access

Nika Kovač, coordinator of the “My Voice, My Choice” campaign, stated at a press conference near the Berlaymont building on Monday, “Today we are making history: for the first time, the European Commission is required to put the issue of the right to abortion on the political agenda through a citizens’ initiative.”

Abortion laws vary significantly among EU member states, with Malta having a strict ban on voluntary termination of pregnancy. This initiative does not seek to establish a right to abortion at the European level, but rather aims to provide financial support to member states that choose to offer safe abortion care to those without access.

Organizers of a European citizens’ initiative have one year to collect 1 million signatures from at least 7 member states. The “My Voice, My Choice” initiative successfully gathered 1.125 million signatures, surpassing the threshold in 19 member states, including Belgium, which contributed 18,313 signatures. It has thus achieved the status of the twelfth successful citizens’ initiative.

The Commission has until March 2, 2026, to respond. While it is not mandated to act, it must provide an explanation if it chooses not to. The Commission reiterated on Monday that its consideration of the initiative is limited to areas that do not conflict with national healthcare legislation.

Looks like we’ve got ourselves a real ‘historic’ moment here—who knew gathering a million signatures was the new Olympic sport? 🏅 But don’t worry, I’m sure the Commission will get right on it… right after their coffee break. ☕️💼

Aha, look at that – a million signatures and still waiting for the Commission to make a decision. It’s like watching a tortoise race a snail, isn’t it? 🐢💨

Just what we need, another bureaucratic tango – because who wouldn’t want to see the EU flex its muscles over issues that should be sorted at home? 🤷‍♂️ Grab your popcorn, folks, this one’s going to be a real corker! 🍿

Looks like the only thing these citizens are getting is a polite nod and a shrug from the Eurocrats—talk about a high-stakes game of bureaucratic charades! 🙄💶

Looks like the EU’s finally got a lightbulb moment! Who knew that “making history” could involve a bunch of signatures instead of actual laws? 🤷‍♂️ #ProgressInBureaucracy

Oh, splendid! Who knew that a million signatures could make the EU budget look like a charity box for a Sunday school picnic? 🍷 Just what we need, more financial aid for a debate that would make even a seasoned diplomat roll their eyes!

Isn’t it adorable how 1.125 million signatures suddenly turn the EU’s bureaucracy into a well-oiled machine? 😂 Just imagine the Commission scrambling to find a reason to ignore this one—classic!

Looks like we’ve finally found a way to turn a basic human right into a bureaucratic tug-of-war—who knew signatures were the new currency? 🤑 Just what we needed, another EU initiative to make the whole thing feel like a slow-motion game of hopscotch!

  9. Well, look who finally decided to step into the 21st century! 🙄 Maybe next they’ll tackle the pressing issue of why a good cuppa costs a fiver in London.
