113-Year-Old Church Relocated in Sweden

Engineers relocate historic building in two days

In Kiruna, Sweden, engineers successfully moved one of the largest wooden structures in the country — the 113-year-old city church — over a distance of five kilometers. The operation, completed in two days, was executed with great precision to maintain the building’s unique architecture.

The church, acclaimed as Sweden’s most beautiful wooden structure, now resides in the new city center. The relocation was necessary due to the expansion of the world’s largest underground iron ore mine, which posed a threat to the mosque’s original site.

Experts state that while the building is now in its new location, the work is ongoing. The bell tower, a separate structure, will be relocated on August 26.

The church will be fully reinforced and adjusted to its new surroundings, according to Reuters.
