Europe to Resolve Iran’s Nuclear Program in 30 Days

Europe has a 30-day window to seek a diplomatic resolution concerning Iran’s nuclear program, as stated by EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas. This announcement follows a special mechanism triggered by Germany, France, and the United Kingdom on Thursday, which will reinstate UN sanctions against Iran after the 30 days.

Kallas emphasized the importance of utilizing this period for diplomacy: “We are entering a new phase of 30 days, where we really have the opportunity to find a diplomatic solution.” This declaration coincides with informal meetings of EU defense and foreign ministers taking place in Copenhagen, focusing on Iran’s nuclear issue, the situation in the Middle East, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. These meetings are being held under Denmark’s EU presidency.

The 30-day process initiated by Germany, France, and the UK aims to revive UN sanctions due to concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities, a move that has provoked criticism from Iran and is likely to escalate tensions between Iran and Europe, following recent military actions by Israel and the US.

In response to the situation, Germany has advised its citizens to leave Iran and avoid travel there, as reported by Reuters. The German foreign ministry expressed concerns over potential retaliatory actions from Tehran against its nationals, stating, “As representatives of the Iranian government have repeatedly threatened with consequences in this matter, it cannot be ruled out that German interests and citizens will be affected by countermeasures in Iran.”

Kaja Kallas contended that Iran’s criticism of the decision is unwarranted, asserting, “Iran has not met the conditions for a long time. Now we have 30 days to find a diplomatic solution.”
