The Israeli strike on the Nasser hospital in the Gaza Strip, which resulted in at least 20 fatalities on Monday, including five journalists, has been labeled as “completely unacceptable” by European Commission spokesman Anouar El Anouni in Brussels on Tuesday.
“Civilians and journalists must be safeguarded under international law,” he stated at a press conference, adding that the residents of Gaza “have endured too much suffering and for too long,” and called for an end to the cycle of violence.
The attack on the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis took place on Monday morning, causing the death of at least 20 individuals, including journalists from Al Jazeera, Reuters, AP, and NBC, according to local authorities under Hamas control.
Reports indicated that the hospital was initially struck by one rocket, followed by a second strike shortly after rescue teams arrived on the scene. Among the casualties were also rescuers, and dozens sustained injuries from the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the incident as a “tragic accident.”
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack as “unacceptable,” stressing the imperative to protect civilians and journalists at all times and urging Israel to adhere to international law.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed his horror over the attack on platform X and called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
U.S. President Donald Trump, when questioned by reporters about the attack, stated he was unaware of it and expressed his discontent, noting that “serious diplomatic efforts are ongoing in the Gaza Strip.” (27.08.2025)
