Paris – The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) and the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (Clepa) express in a joint letter that “the strict CO2 emission targets for cars and vans set for 2030 and 2035 are, in the current context, simply unachievable.”
Both organizations advocate for a recalibration of the existing roadmap for CO2 emission reductions in road transport. They emphasize the need to align with the EU’s climate objectives while maintaining Europe’s industrial competitiveness, social harmony, and the strategic resilience of supply chains.
While manufacturers and suppliers do not explicitly call for delaying the ban on gasoline vehicle sales in 2035, they urge a revision of the standards to incorporate hybrid vehicles, range-extended models (which use a gasoline engine to charge a battery), “highly efficient” gasoline engines, and still-developing synthetic fuels.
