Lokerse Feesten: 88 Police Interventions, 1 Arrest

Lokeren (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Police reported 88 interventions at Lokerse Feesten and Fonnefeesten, including 39 fights and 18 intoxication detentions. 1 suspect was arrested after a car crash; the search continues for another.

As VRT News reported, police reported that this year’s Lokerse Feesten and Fonnefeesten were calm and safe. The festival zone, which includes the paid Lokerse Feesten, the free Fonnefeesten, and the funfair, saw a total of 88 police interventions. 39 were involved in fights, but only 14 resulted in official reports. Many incidents were quickly resolved without further legal action.

“Thanks to the large presence and the camera surveillance, we can see emerging conflicts and intervene before they escalate,”

says police chief Dirk De Pape.

“Considering the number of visitors and the state some of them are in, 39 interventions is quite modest.”

How did police manage safety at this year’s Lokerse Feesten and Fonnefeesten?

During the festivals, police took action against heavy drinking and disturbances. 18 people were held overnight because they were too drunk and could harm themselves or others. They were kept in custody to sober up safely. 16 Visitors were arrested for causing trouble and disturbing the peace.

During the festival week, police arrested 4 visitors. 2 were held for attacking police officers, while the other 2 were wanted for other crimes. Police said these numbers were low, showing few serious problems during the fair.

They also made 13 reports for drug possession; they stayed active against illegal substances. There were 5 noise complaints at night. Overall, police called the week safe and well-organised, with no major issues disturbing the event.

A car crashed into the fairground and then fled toward Antwerp in a serious incident. Police acted quickly and arrested 1 suspect that same evening. However, the second suspect is still missing.

Reports say the car may have been found in Nijlen, a town in Antwerp province, but police and prosecutors have not confirmed this. The investigation is ongoing as officers search for the second suspect.

The Lokerse Feesten and Fonnefeesten are popular summer events in Lokeren that attract many visitors every year. The festivals include paid concerts, free activities, and a funfair. Because large crowds gather, police are present to keep people safe and handle problems quickly. Officials mentioned that most issues are minor, like fights, noise, or drunk visitors.

88 police interventions? Sounds like a quiet Sunday afternoon in Lokeren! At least they only needed one arrest to keep the excitement going. 😂

  7. Only 88 police interventions? Talk about a slow day at the office! 🍻 I guess when you’re drowning in booze and brawls, one arrest really does make you the bell of the ball! 😏
