France Revokes Residence Permit of Man Who Lit Cigarette at War Memorial

This week, a video of a man lighting his cigarette at the Unknown Soldier War Memorial in Paris caused widespread outrage online.

Retailleau condemned the man’s behavior as “indecent and pathetic,” while Veterans and Remembrance Minister Patricia Miralles stated that “France will never let anyone tarnish the memory of those who have died for it. Never.”

Retailleau, a hardline conservative with aspirations for the 2027 presidential election, has adopted a strict stance on security and immigration since his appointment last September. He advocates for a tougher approach toward Algeria to reduce migration and seeks to expel more illegal migrants.

The Unknown Soldier War Memorial, located under the Arc de Triomphe, features a flame and the tomb of a World War I soldier.

The man captured lighting a cigarette at the memorial was arrested on Tuesday and admitted to the act, as reported by several news outlets. According to the French daily Le Figaro, he was known to the police for previous offenses.

Stripping the man of his residency rights in France would be the first step towards deporting him back to Morocco.

  1. Lighting a smoke at a war memorial? Brilliant move, mate! Nothing says “I respect history” like a cheeky puff next to the Unknown Soldier, right? 🤦‍♂️

Seems like lighting a cig at a war memorial is the new ticket to a one-way flight back to Morocco. Bravo, mate, what a way to spark a diplomatic incident! 💨🇫🇷

Typical French elegance, sacrificing class for a quick puff at a memorial—who needs respect for history when you can have a smoke break, right? 🤦‍♂️🇫🇷

Typical French flair for the dramatic, isn’t it? One minute, you’re enjoying a smoke, and the next, you’re on a fast track to Morocco—who knew the Arc de Triomphe came with such strict rules? 😂🚬

Honestly, who knew smoking at a sacred site was the new way to apply for a one-way ticket home? 🇫🇷💨 Talk about taking “light up” to a whole new level!

Oh, brilliant move, mate! Nothing says “honoring our heroes” quite like punting a bloke’s residency for lighting up at a war memorial—next, they’ll revoke your baguette license if you chew too loudly! 🍷💨

Just what we needed, another genius thinking a sacred memorial is the perfect place for a smoke break! 🇫🇷💨 Next, they’ll be serving croissants at the Louvre, non?

Seems like this chap thought he was at a café, not a war memorial. Next time, maybe he’ll remember that lighting up is for socializing, not for honoring the fallen—c’est la vie! 😂

So, lighting a cig at a war memorial? Genius move, mate! 🇫🇷 Because nothing says “I respect my country” quite like a cheeky puff next to a soldier’s tomb. 🤦‍♂️

Honestly, who knew that lighting a cig at a war memorial would get you a one-way ticket back to Morocco? Talk about a “smoking” gun in the battle for public decency! 😂

  11. Lighting a smoke at the Unknown Soldier’s feet—what a brilliant way to show your appreciation for bravery! 🙄 I suppose now we’ll have to add “cigarette etiquette” to the citizenship test, eh?

  12. Lighting a ciggy at a war memorial? Classic move, mate! I suppose the bloke thought he was just adding a bit of ‘smoke’ to the ‘fire’ of remembrance. 💨🎖️
