France Criticizes TikTok’s Tan Lines Trend

The two officials urged Arcom, in collaboration with the European Commission, to ensure social media companies comply with the Digital Services Act. This includes safeguarding minors, assessing and reducing systemic risks, and maintaining transparency about algorithm operations. Paris encouraged the regulator to prepare a file for the appropriate coordinator and, if necessary, work with the European Commission on a potential investigation.

This isn’t the first time the government has taken steps. In April, Chappaz criticized TikTok over “SkinnyTok,” a trend promoting extreme thinness and harmful eating habits. The Commission increased scrutiny on the platform, which has been investigated for potential DSA breaches. TikTok eventually banned the SkinnyTok hashtag under regulatory pressure.

Arcom and TikTok did not respond to POLITICO’s request for comment.

Isn’t it adorable how Paris is trying to regulate the latest social media circus? 🤡 Maybe next they’ll tackle the pressing issue of influencer avocado toast recipes while they’re at it! 🥑💁‍♂️

  3. Oh là là, the French government is really cracking down on the tan lines—next, they’ll be regulating how we sip our café! ☕️ I guess keeping minors safe is a top priority, right after making sure our baguettes are perfectly crisp! 😂
