ViTeS Collects School Bags for 23.3% of Brussels Kids Living in Poverty

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – ViTeS is collecting school bags until August 3, 2025, at Kringwinkel stores in Brussels and Flemish Brabant. 23.3% of Brussels children are poor. Viles says poverty affected school chances.

As VRT News reported, the new school year is coming soon. ViTeS is collecting school bags and backpacks again. ViTeS runs Kringwinkel thrift stores in Brussels and Flemish Brabant. They help children from families who do not have much money.

Every year, schools, social centers, and children’s homes ask for free school bags. But there are not enough bags. Many bags people donate are too old or broken. ViTeS is asking people to give good school bags or new ones. They want every child to start school with a good bag.

In Brussels, almost one in 4 children is poor. In Wallonia and Flanders, the numbers are lower but still high. ViTeS gives the bags to children for free. They clean them first. This helps children feel happy and ready for school.

“Poverty isn’t just a financial problem; it also impacts children’s health, educational opportunities, and future prospects. And these consequences hit the Kringwinkel hard at the start of the school year,”

says Viles.

What can help 23.3% of poor Brussels kids start school?

UNICEF says Belgium has one of the highest child poverty in Europe. In Brussels, 23.3% of children grow up poor or left out. In Wallonia, it is 16.2%, and in Flanders, it is 7.3%. ViTeS wants to help by giving free school bags to children who need them. They also want people to give away bags they do not use.

ViTeS is asking people to donate school bags for children who need them. They run Kringwinkel stores in Brussels and Flemish Brabant. They do not have enough bags for their shops and for poor children. Many schools and care groups ask for bags each year.

Anyone who wants to help can bring a school bag or backpack to a ViTeS thrift store. All ViTeS Kringwinkel stores in Brussels and Flemish Brabant are taking part. The collection goes on until August 312025. After the bags are collected, they will be sorted and cleaned.

According to officials, every year, many children in Belgium start the school year without the basic supplies they need, such as a proper school bag. Organisations like ViTeS, which runs Kringwinkel thrift stores, regularly receive requests from schools, social services, and shelters asking for school bags to help these children. ViTeS organises a yearly collection campaign to gather usable backpacks and give them for free to children from low-income families.

Just what we needed, a heartwarming initiative to remind us that 23.3% of kids in Brussels are rocking the ‘vintage look’ when it comes to school bags. Who knew charity could be so fashionable? 😂

  2. Oh, brilliant! Who knew the secret to solving child poverty in Brussels was just a few second-hand school bags away? 👜✨

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need in Brussels—an initiative to hand out school bags while 23.3% of the kiddos are still figuring out how to afford a proper meal. 🤷‍♂️ Fancy a bag full of hope, or should we just call it a “back-to-school miracle”? 🎒

Crikey, 23.3% of kids in Brussels struggling for a decent bag? Guess the “new school season” is just code for “let’s dig through the thrift store”! 😂

  5. Looks like Brussels kids are getting more school bags than some politicians get votes these days! 😅 Maybe we should just start handing out those bags at the next election rally – at least they’d be useful.

Seems like 23.3% of Brussels kids have a better chance of getting a new school bag than a decent lunch at a posh restaurant. Hope they enjoy their “new” vintage bags, straight from the thrift shop runway! 😜👜

Well, who knew that 23.3% of Brussels kids were in such dire need of school bags? I suppose nothing says “education” like a second-hand rucksack from the nearest thrift shop—it’s practically a rite of passage, innit? 🎒😏

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “back to school” like a fashionable second-hand bag for the little ones in poverty—who needs new, right? 😏 Just what the kids need to feel like they’re winning at life while lugging around someone’s old Spiderman backpack! 🦸‍♂️

  9. Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a school bag collection to tackle chronic poverty—because, clearly, all those kids just needed a stylish backpack to ace their exams! 🎒😂

Isn’t it just delightful that in the heart of Europe, a quarter of our kids are rocking the ‘vintage chic’ look for school? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next year we can collect some actual learning too, while we’re at it! 🏫✨

Seems like we’ve hit peak irony in Brussels—while the kids rock those shiny new bags, the adults are still trying to find a way to pay the rent. Good luck to ViTeS; hope the bags are more than just a fashion statement! 😂👜

Collecting school bags for kids while 23.3% of them are living in poverty? Brilliant, just what we need—more bags to hold empty dreams! 😏👜

Oh, brilliant, nothing screams “back to school” quite like rummaging through used bags because, you know, new ones are just too mainstream. 🙄 Guess it’s time for the kids to rock that vintage look while we pretend poverty is just a quirky fashion statement! 👜✨
