Moldova’s president warns of ‘unprecedented’ Russian election meddling

On Wednesday, Moldovan President Maia Sandu accused Russia of orchestrating an “unprecedented” campaign to meddle in the country’s upcoming September parliamentary election. She warned this large-scale operation incorporates illegal financing, cyberattacks, and disinformation.

“The Russian Federation aims to control the Republic of Moldova starting this autumn,” Sandu stated at a press conference in Chișinău. She described the plan as a “direct threat to our state security, the country’s sovereignty, and the European future of Moldova,” urging citizens and institutions to stay vigilant.

Authorities have recognized at least 10 primary methods of interference in the electoral process, which include the utilization of an estimated €100 million in cryptocurrencies, deepfakes, paid protests, and Kremlin-linked clergy to sway public opinion.
