Brussels – Sweden, along with 24 other nations and the EU, has issued a joint statement urging an end to the conflict in Gaza. The statement was endorsed by the foreign ministers of the participating countries.
“We unite with a clear, pressing message: The war in Gaza must cease immediately. The suffering of civilians has reached unprecedented levels,” the statement declares.
Nations including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Denmark are demanding that Israel remove its restrictions on humanitarian aid and permit the UN and relief organizations to function in Gaza. They also denounce “the brutal killing of civilians, including children.”
“We further call for an end to the Israeli government’s unlawful settlement expansion and the violence of settlers against civilians,” commented Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard to TT.
Recently, the foreign ministers of EU countries discussed a plan for more immediate aid to Gaza; however, implementing joint EU actions—such as suspending or completely halting the EU’s economic-political cooperation agreement with Israel—remains unlikely.
“I do not consider it realistic to expect consensus on such a decision, and I believe it is crucial to maintain channels of dialogue with Israel,” Maria Malmer Stenergard stated to TT at that time.
