Beijing – On Monday, China affirmed that European Union leaders will convene in the country for a summit scheduled for Thursday. The announcement was made by the EU on Friday, revealing that the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will participate in the trip.
A range of issues is straining bilateral relations, including European tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and the perceived restrictions faced by certain European firms in China.
Additionally, the close economic and diplomatic ties between China and Russia have raised concerns in various EU capitals, which accuse Beijing of indirectly aiding Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine.
During the summit, European leaders are expected to engage with President Xi Jinping to “address EU-China relations and current geopolitical challenges, particularly the conflict initiated by Russia in Ukraine.” They will also meet with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang to delve deeper into the trade and economic dimensions of their relationship, as stated in the announcement.
