EU Justice Chief Committed to Cracking Down on Illegal Goods Sold on Temu, Shein

Platforms such as Temu and Shein focus on selling inexpensive items through small packages, with millions entering the EU daily. Recently, a European Parliament report highlighted that the majority of “unsafe and illegal products” coming into the EU are from small parcels in online trade, particularly from Chinese platforms. In October last year, the European Commission began a formal investigation into Temu, identifying potential failures in addressing noncompliant products. Additionally, Shein has faced scrutiny from Brussels over alleged consumer protection law breaches, involving false discounts and misleading sustainability claims. The Parliament’s report noted challenges customs officials face in managing these products at major ports or airports, making it almost impossible to prevent their entry into the EU. Salvatore De Meo, the EPP MEP who prepared the report, emphasized the risk to consumer safety and the disadvantage to compliant businesses. This sentiment is echoed by McGrath: “Protecting consumers is critical, but there’s also a significant competitive disadvantage for European businesses,” the Irish commissioner told the Guardian. “They have to compete with sellers not adhering to our regulations.”

Looks like Temu and Shein are the new champions of “let’s see what we can sneak past customs today!” 🎉 Nothing like a good ol’ game of “will it explode?” to keep the EU on its toes.

Oh, fantastic! Just what we need—more cheap plastic junk flooding the market. Who knew keeping our consumers safe would be such a tedious task? 🤦‍♂️

You’d think with all the high-tech gadgets we have, keeping an eye on dodgy parcels would be easier than finding a decent cup of coffee in Brussels. But hey, who needs safety when you can have cheap trinkets, right? 😏💸

  4. Just what we needed, more fine print and regulations to remind us that shopping should come with a side of anxiety. Who knew buying a t-shirt could be such a high-stakes game? 😒✈️

Brilliant! Who knew that cheap plastic trinkets could pose such a massive threat to European civilization? 😂 Let’s just keep the customs folks chasing their tails while the real treasures flood in!

Seems like Temu and Shein are on a first-name basis with the term “illegal,” eh? Who knew online shopping could double as a game of hide-and-seek with safety standards! 😂🛍️
