Brussels – Kaja Kallas expressed her disappointment that the new EU sanctions against Moscow could not be finalized on Tuesday.
“We were very close,” she mentioned to the media following a gathering of foreign ministers in Brussels, expressing hope for an agreement within the week.
On the same day, Slovakia reiterated its opposition through a post by Prime Minister Robert Fico on X.
Fico is leveraging this veto to push the Commission for assurances regarding its gas supply, as the EU aims to eliminate Russian gas imports by 2027.
However, Kaja Kallas believes Slovakia has received adequate assurances from Brussels to reconsider its veto.
The proposed sanctions against Moscow include a new cap on the price of Russian oil exports. The current cap, set by G7 and EU nations, is $60 per barrel, with the European Commission suggesting a reduction to $45. (July 15, 2025)
