EP Report Adopted: Vajs Criticizes Prolonged Unjust Blocking of Country’s Accession Due to Bilateral Disputes

Strasbourg – The European Parliament today endorsed the report by Austrian MEP Thomas Weiss regarding the country for 2023 and 2024, with the voting results showing 461 in favor, 121 against, and 107 abstentions.

In a statement following the vote, Weiss highlighted that the country stands out as a regional leader, reflecting a genuine commitment to EU principles, including the significant name change and ambitious reforms.

– Nevertheless, its accession has been unfairly stalled for an extended period due to bilateral conflicts, leading to public frustration and disillusionment with the EU, Weiss remarked.

He emphasized that the report stresses that enlargement must follow a merit-based approach, adhering to the Copenhagen criteria, and urges the country to carry out the necessary reforms.

– I call on all political parties in North Macedonia to engage in constructive dialogue to reach the required consensus, which would enhance the multiethnic fabric of the country and speed up EU progress, Weiss stated.

He pointed out that, as the EU rapporteur for the country, he has worked diligently to create a “well-balanced and impartial report on this country’s democratic advancement.”

– Unfortunately, some Bulgarian MEPs have leveraged the report for domestic political purposes, Weiss added.

Prior to the vote on the report, amendments put forth by MEPs Andrzej Halicki representing the European People’s Party (EPP), Ketlin Van Brempt from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), and Dan Barna from the liberal group “Renew Europe” (RE) were accepted, which excluded references to “Macedonian language and identity” from the text of the report. Oh, splendid! Nothing says “let’s join the EU” quite like a prolonged game of diplomatic tug-of-war, right? 🇪🇺😂 Good luck sorting that out, lads—might need more than just a name change and a couple of reforms!

Oh, fantastic! Another round of political ping-pong while the real issues sit in the corner like a wallflower at a Euro disco. 🙄 Just what we needed—more process and less progress, eh?

Looks like the EU is doing its usual tango – one step forward, two steps back, all while arguing about names like it’s a game of Scrabble. Can’t wait for the next round of “Who Can Stall the Most?” – I hear the snacks are to die for! 😂

Oh, fantastic! A report on a country that’s been stuck in limbo longer than a queue at a German bakery—just what we needed! 🍞 Who knew bilateral disputes could rival a soap opera for drama?

Seems like we’re all just sitting here waiting for the grand unveiling of North Macedonia’s EU membership, eh? 🤷‍♂️ I suppose if we keep stirring the pot long enough, it’ll eventually boil over into a genuinely constructive dialogue—if only we could find a recipe that requires less drama! 😏

Oh, fantastic, yet another report where political squabbling takes center stage while everyone waits for a miracle to happen. 🇲🇰 Meanwhile, I’ll just be here sipping my espresso and watching the EU play chess while the rest of us are stuck in checkmate. 😏

Seems like the EU’s got a new Olympic sport: waiting for countries to join while they argue over who gets to keep the name tag. Bravo! 🎉
