European Parliament Approves Resolution on Post-War Killings in Slovenia

Strasbourg – The European Parliament has passed a resolution in Strasbourg aimed at commemorating the victims of the post-war communist era in Slovenia, creating a divide among Slovenian MEPs.

The resolution, put forward by Slovenian MEP Romana Tomc (EPP/SDS), received 357 votes in favor, 266 against, and 16 abstentions.

This resolution underscores the necessity of remembering all victims of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes throughout Europe, particularly focusing on the atrocities committed by the Yugoslav communist regime in Slovenia after World War II, including post-war executions and mass burial sites.

It urges Slovenian authorities to persist in the investigation of hidden graves and advocates for a thorough examination of the archives of Yugoslav secret services, while suggesting that Slovenia establish a national day of remembrance for victims of authoritarian and totalitarian systems, including communism.

This initiative stemmed from a petition to the European Parliament submitted two years ago, following the abolition of May 17 as a day of remembrance for victims of communist violence by Prime Minister Robert Golob’s government at the start of its term in 2022. This day had been designated by the previous government led by Janez Janša shortly before its term concluded.

During the resolution’s vote, Slovenian MEPs split into opposing factions. EPP members expressed approval of the resolution, while MEPs from left-leaning groups S&D, Renew, and Greens vehemently opposed its passage. (July 8)

Oh lovely, nothing like a good ol’ political spat over who gets to remember the past, eh? Can’t wait for the next resolution on which flavor of ice cream is best—I’m sure it’ll be a blockbuster too! 🍦😏

Oh, lovely! Nothing like a good old European resolution to remind us that we can’t decide on the past, but we can certainly divide the present, eh? 🤷‍♂️ It’s almost as if we enjoy a good squabble more than a cup of espresso! ☕️

Oh, just what we needed—another resolution to remind us of our glorious past! Nothing like a bit of political theatre to spice up the summer, eh? 🎭🇸🇮

Just what we needed, another round of “who’s more victimized” in the grand theatre of European politics. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe we should hand out popcorn next – it seems like a real blockbuster! 🍿

  5. Coz, who doesn’t love a bit of historical revisionism to spice up a Tuesday in Strasbourg? 🍷 At least now we can all agree that remembering the past is the new trendy thing—who needs a national holiday for a good ol’ fashioned session of backstabbing, right? 😏

So, the Parliament decided to play historical detective on Slovenia’s post-war drama, eh? I suppose this will keep the MEPs busy while the real issues are buried deeper than those hidden graves! 😏🕵️‍♂️

A right pickle this, innit? Just when you thought Slovenia was done with its history, the Eurocrats decide to dig up the past like it’s a vintage wine—cheers to that! 🍷😏

Oh, brilliant! Nothing like a bit of parliamentary drama to remind us how to dig up old graves—literally and metaphorically. 🥴 Who knew memory lanes could be such a bumpy ride in Slovenia?
