Study finds only one in three Bulgarians takes climate action, compared to 59 percent in the rest of the EU.

BRUSSELS – This year, only 33 percent of Bulgarians have adopted measures against climate change, compared to nearly double that, 59 percent, across the EU. This data comes from a Eurobarometer survey released by the European Commission.

In the EU, 64 percent of individuals engage in separate waste collection; however, in Bulgaria, this figure stands at just 28 percent. While 49 percent of the EU population avoids pollutants in their daily lives, such as plastic bags, only 34 percent of Bulgarians have taken similar steps, according to the survey data.

Climate change is viewed as a very serious problem by 37 percent of EU respondents (41 percent of Bulgarians), with 48 percent in the EU and 46 percent in Bulgaria indicating it as a serious issue. A substantial majority, 81 percent in the EU and 73 percent in Bulgaria, supports the EU’s objective of achieving clean production by 2050.

A significant 85-86 percent believe that addressing environmental changes should be a top priority, with 77 percent in the EU and 67 percent in Bulgaria asserting that the investments needed to combat climate issues are less than potential damages. Furthermore, 52 percent of EU participants and 55 percent of Bulgarians feel that national media do not provide sufficient information on these matters.

When queried about their greatest global concern, 61 percent in the EU and 67 percent in Bulgaria cited armed conflicts as the top issue. Poverty, hunger, and lack of water ranked second, with 50 percent in the EU and 52 percent in Bulgaria mentioning it, followed by the economic situation, identified by 47 percent of EU respondents and 52 percent of Bulgarian participants.

Earlier this month, the European Commission positively evaluated the revised version of Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). The updated plan includes a chapter on the REPowerEU initiative, introducing new measures to tackle energy poverty, support the liberalization of the electricity market, and promote the deployment and storage of renewable energy sources. Notably, nearly 50 percent of the total resources are allocated to climate-related measures. (June 30)

Looks like Bulgarians are putting the “meh” in “measures against climate change” while the rest of Europe is busy saving the planet. 😂 Maybe we should start a “Save the Planet” club – membership required: a pulse and a bit of enthusiasm!

Only one in three Bulgarians taking climate action? Maybe they’re still waiting for the weather to sort itself out like a good cup of coffee—strong but not too hot, eh? ☕️

Looks like Bulgarians are saving their energy for more pressing matters—like figuring out where to find the best banitsa! 🥐🌍 Maybe climate change can wait while we sort out our priorities, right? 😂

Bulgaria really knows how to live life on the edge, doesn’t it? While the rest of us are busy saving the planet, they’re still figuring out how to recycle a plastic bottle. 😂
