Key takeaways from Von der Leyen’s EU no-confidence debate

“In fact, let us call it by its name – it is simply a lie.”

6. Socialists and liberals are seizing the chance to assert themselves

The Socialists and liberals saw this debate as a chance to regain influence, feeling sidelined since the EU election. They aimed to demonstrate to the EPP that collaboration is necessary to govern Europe, as they view rightward forces, backing the motion, as unreliable.

“If you betray us again, be clear that social democracy will lead the resistance against your drift,” stated S&D chief Iratxe García, yet clarified her group would not support the no-confidence motion.

The EPP has frequently relied on far-right support in Parliament to shape the agenda, obstruct reports, or pass measures, with Socialists and liberals unable to prevent it.

7. There’s nothing worse than a friend who feels disappointed in you

Valérie Hayer, from liberal Renew, questioned von der Leyen: “We ask you clearly: Who are your allies in this Parliament? Your real allies?”

“You are witnessing the impasse that you and your political family are facing, by having allowed the EPP to favor alliances of convenience with the far right.”

8. Even the centrists are wobbling on VDL

The discontent among the Socialists is evident, with the German delegation considering abstaining during the vote on Thursday.

Seems like the EU’s political soap opera just hit a new low – who knew ‘collaboration’ was just a fancy word for ‘let’s pretend to like each other’? 😏

Looks like everyone’s playing musical chairs in the EU, but this time the music’s a bit off-key, innit? 🤔 Socialists and liberals are practically begging for a dance partner while the EPP’s off two-stepping with the far right. Classic! 🎭💃

Seems like the EU’s latest debate was an absolute thriller—nothing like a good ol’ political soap opera to brighten up my dreary day, right? 😂 Bravo to the Socialists and libs for putting on a show; next time, maybe they could throw in a dance number for added flair! 🕺💃

Oh, what a delightful soap opera we have here! Looks like the Socialists and liberals are dusting off their old scripts to remind the EPP that betrayal is so last season. 🍿
