A letter from campaigners criticized the Western sanctions regime for being undermined by companies that engage in profiteering. The Cabinet Office did not respond to requests for comment before the article’s publication. Seven Ukraine-based and pro-Ukrainian groups, who signed the letter, urged Minister Thomas-Symonds to disclose contracts with TotalEnergies, cease procurement from suppliers with Russian energy ties, and plan for a transition to clean energy sources. Iryna Ptashnyk of Razom We Stand described it as indefensible for U.K. taxpayer money to support TotalEnergies, urging the government to end such contracts. TotalEnergies claims its contracts for supplying Russian gas stem from long-term arrangements made before Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine. The gas for U.K. government contracts is sourced domestically, likely not from Russia, and TotalEnergies does not import Russian LNG directly to the U.K., adhering to the U.K.’s ban.

Looks like we’ve found the perfect way to keep the lights on while still playing footsie with the “bad boys” of energy! 🕺💼 Who knew making a fortune could come with a side of moral ambiguity? 🤷♂️

Not quite sure what’s more surreal, the idea of “long-term arrangements” saving the day or the thought of taxpayers bankrolling energy companies while they play the moral high ground. Classic British move, innit? 🤷♂️💷

Seems like we’re all in the same boat, eh? Let’s just keep the cozy deals going while pretending to champion democracy! Classic! 😏💸
