The World Nears an Ocean-Saving Treaty

The treaty negotiation process began 20 years ago and, although it was adopted in 2023, it requires ratification by at least 60 countries to take effect. This has been slow to happen. The treaty aims to create marine protected areas in international waters, which are crucial for addressing threats from climate change, fishing, and pollution, as these waters comprise about two-thirds of the ocean.

However, convincing 60 countries to ratify is just the beginning; determining which regions of international waters to protect from overfishing—and the methods to do so—remains a significant challenge.

“Expect opposition, as with any convention,” Dale Webber, Jamaica’s special envoy for climate change, environment, ocean, and blue economy, told POLITICO. “Some nations fishing on the high seas claim, ‘You’re trying to limit my catch!’ but such limits are exactly what’s needed.”

Facing a Slow Start

Despite assurances from French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Monday’s conference opening, smaller, developing countries and environmental organizations feel the responsibility for ocean protection still largely falls on them.

“More action is needed, particularly from Western countries,” Panamanian climate envoy Juan Carlos Monterrey Gómez told POLITICO. He cited the ’30 by 30′ goal, wherein developing countries are currently shouldering the burden of protecting 30 percent of the world’s oceans by 2030.

This week, French Polynesia stood out by announcing the establishment of the world’s largest Marine Protected Area, securing approximately 1.1 million square kilometers of its waters, which are rich with tropical fish, sharks, rays, dolphins, and 150 species of valuable corals.

Seems like we’re all on the edge of our seats waiting for 60 countries to agree on something—maybe they’ll sort it faster than I can get a taxi in Paris during rush hour! 🌍🚕 Good luck with that ‘marine protected area,’ I hear fishing boats are already booking their next holiday to the high seas! 🐟✌️

So, after 20 years of chat and a treaty that’s still gathering dust, we’re finally talking about saving the ocean? Bravo, chaps! 🎉 But let’s see if those 60 countries can agree on what to protect before we all drown in our own apathy. 🐟💧

Looks like we’ve finally agreed on something after two decades—let’s just hope it doesn’t take another 20 years to get those 60 countries on board! 😏 If only protecting the oceans was as easy as fishing for compliments at a gala, eh? 🌊

Oh, brilliant! After 20 years of chat and a bunch of big wigs patting each other on the back, we’re still waiting for 60 nations to agree on which bit of ocean to save. 🐟 Perhaps we should just put a sign up: “Ocean: Please Do Not Feed the Overfishing!” 😂

Oh sure, 20 years to draft a treaty and now we need 60 countries to play along—sounds like a classic European group project, doesn’t it? 😏 Let’s just hope the fish don’t form their own union while we’re at it! 🐠

  6. Talk about a classic case of “let’s wait 20 years and then make the real work even harder,” eh? 🤦‍♂️ I suppose if we can just convince 60 countries to agree over a pint, we might actually save the oceans before the fish start charging us rent! 🐟💼

Brilliant, isn’t it? After two decades of talking, we’re finally at the point where we need 60 nations to agree, like herding cats in a pub on a Friday night. 🍻 Good luck with that!

  8. So, after 20 years of talks, we’re finally getting around to saving the oceans? Brilliant! 🤦‍♂️ Who knew protecting our blue planet would require more diplomacy than a wedding planning committee?

Oh, a treaty to save the oceans, how quaint! 🐠 Just what we need—another round of “let’s agree to disagree” while the fish swim by in disbelief. 🌊

So, a treaty to save the oceans after 20 years of chit-chat? Brilliant! Just what we need – a 60-country approval party that’ll probably take longer than a rain-soaked British summer! 🌧️🦈

Who knew saving the ocean would take longer than the average European vacation? 😏 But hey, at least we’ll finally have protected fish to brag about at our next fancy dinner, right? 🐟🍽️

Looks like we’ll be saving the oceans just as soon as we can get a bunch of countries to agree on something—shouldn’t take longer than, say, an eternity. 🐢💼

Looks like after two decades of chit-chat, we’re finally about to protect the ocean—assuming 60 countries can be bothered to sign a piece of paper. Who knew saving the planet would be such a slow dance? 🤷‍♂️🌊
