Romanian Business Community Joins European Commission’s Trade Champions Network Initiative

Bucharest – The European network of economic champions, aimed at aligning European trade policies with citizens, entrepreneurs, and local communities, includes over 120 distinguished individuals from all EU member states, such as entrepreneurs, economists, opinion leaders, and diverse sector professionals.

These members voluntarily offer practical expertise to raise awareness of international trade benefits among those less informed about the opportunities available, helping to clarify the EU’s trade agenda. Additionally, the network serves as a direct feedback channel for the Commission from local economic communities.

Romania is represented by a diverse team of 15 champions, with expertise spanning key modern economy sectors including technology, energy, transport, media, education, industry, and consultancy, alongside members from academia and employer organizations. The selection made by the European Commission Representation focused on professional diversity and gender equality.

“Through the Trade Champions network, we are fostering a genuine connection between European policies and the dynamics of the Romanian economy. We have credible Romanian voices with experience and dedication to the European project, and we appreciate their engagement. In today’s dynamic and complex global scenario, it’s vital to effectively communicate the advantages of international trade at the local level. Economic champions will help convey this message and contribute to creating a competitive, fair, and agile Europe,” stated Ramona Chiriac, head of the European Commission Representation in Romania.

Members of the network underscored shared values and the urgency for both Romania and the European Union to enhance their responsiveness to ensure economic competitiveness in the current global landscape. Key priorities include simplifying and streamlining processes.

In today’s international context, trade policy is evolving into a strategic tool for competitiveness, economic security, and sustainability. The European Union currently holds trade agreements with 76 countries and is actively pursuing new partnerships.

The European Trade Champions network is set to be officially launched on July 2, 2025, under the auspices of the Directorate-General for Trade (DG TRADE), with coordination at the national level led by the European Commission Representation in Romania. (10.6.2025)
