Ana Catarina Mendes’ Book Commemorates 75 Years of the Schuman Declaration with Insights for Europe’s Future

BRUSSELS – A book coordinated by MEP Ana Catarina Mendes (PS) celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, featuring 52 contributions from notable Portuguese figures across politics and culture.

Motivated by significant concerns regarding global issues and a desire to advocate for democracy and the European Union (EU), the MEP took this opportunity to invite a diverse group, including individuals with ties to European institutions, to share their insights on Europe’s future.

Reflecting on the declaration that initiated the EU 75 years ago, Ana Catarina Mendes aims to “continue building Europe,” as she stated in a conversation with Lusa, emphasizing the inclusion of “various perspectives and viewpoints.”

The book titled “75 Years of the Schuman Declaration, What Future for Europe” features contributions from several prominent figures, including the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the European Council, António Costa, former European Commission President José Manuel Durão Barroso, current and former MEPs, as well as cultural personalities such as singer and anti-racism advocate Dino de Santiago.

According to Mendes, “There are 52 voices addressing pressing issues, from climate change and the war in Ukraine to defense policy and human rights, representing a spectrum of political viewpoints.”

The overarching theme of this work is to contribute to the dialogue and “provide a reason for us to continue having Europe,” she added.

The book will be launched this Thursday in Lisbon, with presentations by the President of the Bank of Portugal, Mário Centeno, who also contributed to the volume, alongside historian José Pacheco Pereira and journalist Teresa de Sousa. (11/06/2025)

A book about the Schuman Declaration, you say? Because what Europe really needs is yet another collection of opinions from people who already talk too much. 🍷📚

Looks like Ms. Mendes decided to gather 52 opinions on Europe’s future because one voice clearly wasn’t enough. 🎤💤 Hope they at least agree on which café to discuss it over a nice cup of overpriced coffee! ☕️😏

Oh, a book on the Schuman Declaration’s 75th? Just what I needed! 🙄 Because nothing says “let’s fix Europe” like 52 opinions on how to keep talking about it for another 75 years! 📚💼

Oh great, another book to remind us how Europe still can’t decide if it’s a family reunion or a political soap opera. 🤦‍♂️ 52 opinions on the future of Europe—just what we need to spice up our next coffee break! ☕📚

Looks like 52 people got together to ponder Europe’s future while we’re still trying to figure out where we left our keys. 🤷‍♂️ I guess if you can’t make sense of the present, write a book on the past, right? 📚

A book about the Schuman Declaration and the future of Europe? How original! Just what we need—more politicians sharing their “insights” while we’re all trying to figure out how to buy eggs without a mortgage. 😂📚

Right, because what we really needed was another collection of opinions to remind us how to build Europe—just what we were missing! 🙄 But hey, at least it’s got 52 voices, so everyone can argue about it for another 75 years.

  9. So, we’ve got a book celebrating 75 years of the Schuman Declaration, because clearly, what we needed was more opinions from politicians and cultural elites on how to fix Europe. Bravo, Ana Catarina Mendes, perhaps next time you could throw in some insights from the local taxi drivers too? 😂📚

A book on the Schuman Declaration, eh? Just what Europe needs: 52 more opinions on how to solve our mess. Can’t wait for the next bestseller, “How to Fix Europe in 10 Easy Steps!” 📚😂
