As Albania advances towards European Union membership, it must enhance its cybersecurity infrastructure. This was highlighted by André Rizzo, head of the Political Section at the EU Delegation in Albania, during a conference for the “Cyber Balkans” project in Tirana.
The European Union is collaborating with Albanian institutions through the “Cyber Balkans” initiative to strengthen cyber resilience, boost technical capabilities, and ensure that no nation in the region faces emerging threats alone.
Rizzo emphasized, “We are experiencing a high and ongoing rate of malicious cyber activities targeting the EU, its member states, and its partners. Enhancing cybersecurity is vital for ensuring the EU’s resilience and security, particularly as Western Balkan countries pursue EU membership.”
He added that “the EU is providing support to Albania and neighboring countries to develop their cybersecurity capacities.”
Albania plays a critical role in the “Cyber Balkans” initiative, which aims to improve cybersecurity capabilities and foster cooperation in the Western Balkans. The country has organized events such as the Western Balkan Cyber Camp to train emerging cybersecurity professionals. The recent ‘Western Balkan Cyber Camp 2025’ was a three-day event that gathered 60 young participants from six Western Balkan nations, focusing on enhancing their technical and strategic skills in cybersecurity.
Furthermore, Albania is actively participating in EU projects designed to bolster resilience against cyberattacks.
