Fico: Slovakia Will Not Back New EU Sanctions on Russia Without European Commission Crisis Resolution

Bratislava – Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) declared on social media that the Slovak Republic will not endorse the proposed 18th sanctions package against the Russian Federation unless the European Commission (EC) offers a tangible solution to the crisis Slovakia faces due to the complete cessation of gas, oil, and nuclear fuel imports from Russia, as reported by TASR.

The European Commission unveiled the 18th sanctions package against Russia on Tuesday, targeting the country’s energy and military revenue streams in response to its invasion of Ukraine. This new package suggests lowering the price cap on Russian oil and prohibits trading with companies managing the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, as well as banks involved in evading sanctions.

Discussions among EU member states regarding the 18th sanctions package will commence this week, with its approval requiring unanimous agreement. (June 10)

“The Slovak Republic will not support the proposed 18th sanctions package against the Russian Federation unless the European Commission provides a real solution to the crisis situation that Slovakia will face after the complete halt of gas, oil, and nuclear fuel supplies from Russia.” Robert Fico

Seems like Fico’s playing hardball—what a surprise! 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next he’ll ask the EC for a magic wand to solve all our energy woes. Classic! 💁‍♂️

Oh, fantastic! Slovakia holding out for a “real solution” before joining the sanctions party – what’s next, a diplomatic dance-off? 🕺💃 Maybe the EC should throw in a complimentary gas tank while they’re at it!

Typical Fico, always waiting for a fairy godmother at the EC to wave a wand and solve all our problems. Guess we’ll just sit here twiddling our thumbs until that miracle happens, eh? 😂

Seems like Fico’s waiting for a miracle from the EC while clutching his gas bill – classic Slovak negotiation tactics, eh? 🤷‍♂️💸 Let’s hope the solution comes quicker than a Bratislava taxi ride!
