Slovenia to Propose Measures to Brussels in Response to US Sanctions on Slovenian ICC Judge

Ljubljana – Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob voiced regret over the U.S. decision on Thursday to impose sanctions on four International Criminal Court (ICC) judges, including Slovenian judge Beti Hohler. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Slovenia will advocate for the immediate activation of the European Union’s blocking statute, given that Hohler is an EU citizen.

According to the U.S. government, the four ICC judges “actively participated in illegal and baseless actions of the ICC aimed at the U.S. or our close ally Israel.”

The Prime Minister’s office confirmed Slovenia’s full support for Hohler as she fulfills her nine-year mandate at the ICC, which began in 2024.

Hohler is the only EU citizen among the ICC judges facing sanctions. “Slovenia will propose the immediate activation of the European Union’s blocking statute due to the inclusion of an EU citizen on the U.S. sanctions list,” they remarked.

“Slovenia remains and will continue to be a steadfast supporter of the independence and impartiality of this key international criminal judicial institution and its personnel,” the Prime Minister’s cabinet declared. (June 6)

Seems like Slovenia’s got a new hobby—proposing measures to Brussels like it’s an Olympic sport! 🥇 Who knew diplomacy could be so competitive? 😂

Guess it’s time for Slovenia to whip out the ol’ “blocking statute” like it’s a secret weapon in a serious game of international chess. 🤔 Who knew defending a judge could be so… bureaucratically exhilarating? 🎩✨

Oh great, just what we need – Slovenia stepping up to the EU like a knight in shining armor, ready to shield a judge from Uncle Sam’s sanctions. 🤦‍♂️ I mean, who knew being a judge could come with this kind of geopolitical drama?

Oh, fantastic move, Slovenia! Nothing says “we’re taken seriously” quite like proposing measures while clutching our pearls over a wee bit of American disapproval. 🥴

Looks like Slovenia’s got its hands full trying to show the big boys in Washington that a pint-sized country can still throw a mean tantrum. 🍻 Better get the crayons out for that proposal to Brussels! 😂

Oh, brilliant move by Slovenia—nothing says “we care” like proposing a blocking statute while our judge gets a VIP pass to the sanction party! 🍷😅

Can the EU Preserve Its Fragile Single Market?

Most people familiar with EU affairs know the single market is a myth. Hailed as the bedrock of the European Union, it was never completed and is now crumbling.
Saving it is vital but difficult. The Commission has just announced a new single market ‘strategy’, although it remains to be seen how effective the Brussels executive’s efforts will be. Its recent track record is disappointing.
