Kolíková: Suspension of EU Funds Possible as Slovak Prime Minister Undermines Democratic Foundations

Bratislava – Mária Kolíková, an opposition MP in the National Council of the Slovak Republic and former Minister of Justice from the SaS party, has indicated that the suspension of EU funds for Slovakia is a possibility. During a press conference on Tuesday, she emphasized the need for the European Union to be confident that its financial interests are safeguarded, criticizing Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) for undermining the democratic principles that citizens fought for, as reported by TASR.

Kolíková expressed concern that following the dismantling of the National Criminal Agency and the Office of the Special Prosecutor, there are no new measures to adequately prosecute potential fraud related to EU financial interests.

MP Juraj Krúpa (SaS) mentioned that after the second delegation from the European Parliament completes its inspection, MEPs will prepare either a single joint report or two separate ones for submission to the European Commission. He highlighted that 80 to 90 percent of public investments in Slovakia are funded by the EU. (June 3)

Looks like Fico’s really got a handle on democracy—who knew undermining it could be so lucrative? 🤦‍♂️ Next, we’ll be asking the EU if they’d like a side of irony with their funding, eh? 💶😏

Looks like Slovakia’s democratic foundation is getting a makeover—who knew it could double as a demolition site? 😏 If only the PM put as much effort into ruling as he does into dodging EU funds! 💸

Imagine that! Slovakia putting its hand in the EU cookie jar while forgetting to bake a few democratic cookies. 🤦‍♂️ Might as well throw in a “Thanks for the funds, but we prefer a dictatorship!” sticker on the application. 🍪💶
