Danko cites Merz’s caution on EU fund withdrawal, asserting that Slovaks are not German slaves.

Bratislava – Andrej Danko, chairman of the SNS, asserted that Slovaks are not slaves of Germany, responding to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s remarks about potentially withdrawing EU funds from Slovakia due to its divergence from EU norms. This was reported by TASR.

“The Germans suggest that our independent views could lead to a loss of EU funds. This comes on top of the existing practices by powerful EU states to restrict Eastern countries’ access to affordable energy, which undermines our competitiveness,” Danko stated.

Danko further pointed out that Germany and France are distressed by their inability to maintain their accustomed living standards due to a significant influx of immigrants and social costs that Germany can no longer sustain. “We acknowledge the investments and collaborations with German companies, even as many profits are repatriated to Germany,” he noted.

He characterized the German Chancellor’s comments as a display of unacceptable arrogance. “I find it hard to believe that any chancellor would make such remarks towards another nation in the EU. The German chancellor seems to forget that Slovakia is not a colony. Unfortunately, their behavior often reflects an attitude of dominance,” he remarked.

“I trust that our Foreign Minister, Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD), and our government will convey clearly to the German Chancellor in the upcoming Brussels meeting that he is equal to our Prime Minister, Robert Fico (Smer-SD), and must treat us with respect. It deeply concerns me that the German chancellor does not see that such statements threaten the unity of the EU. We are not your slaves, and I hope this message is understood in Germany,” Danko added.

Prime Minister Fico expressed strong opposition to Merz’s remarks, labeling them unacceptable for contemporary Europe during a visit to Armenia. Blanár echoed this sentiment, stating that Chancellor Merz’s perspective is inappropriate and that when a nation raises objections, it should be viewed in light of its sovereignty and should lead to dialogue rather than coercive actions.
