Bruges (Eurotoday) – Farys and the City of Bruges have installed 16 swift nest boxes 40 meters high on the Sint-Kruis water tower, according to Dirk De Vos. They have also added bat roosting slots, enhancing urban biodiversity without affecting the structure of the tower.
As VRT News reported, Farys, the company responsible for the water tower on Maalsesteenweg in Sint-Kruis, Bruges, viewed the recent renovations as an opportunity to give back to nature. In partnership with the City of Bruges, they mounted 16 purpose-built nest boxes just beneath the tower’s edges, approximately 40 meters above ground level.
These boxes were made specifically for swifts, a bird species struggling to find natural nesting spots in Flanders. Urban renewal projects have eliminated many of the small, sheltered spaces in older buildings that swifts traditionally used for nesting, leading to a decline in their population. With the installation of the elevated nesting boxes, Farys aims to provide swifts with a secure environment to breed and raise their young.
How is the Bruges water tower helping swifts and bats thrive?
According to Dirk De Vos of Farys, now that the swift boxes are in place, it’s up to nature to take its course. The boxes offer everything swifts need for nesting, but the birds must first discover and choose to inhabit them.
Before proceeding with the installation, Farys evaluated the potential impact of swift nesting on the tower’s cleanliness. Drawing from a similar project on a water tower in Middelkerke—where nesting swifts caused no structural or hygiene issues—the company concluded that the same positive outcome could be expected in Bruges.
In addition to the swift boxes, Farys also included special wall slots to encourage bats to roost inside the Sint-Kruis water tower. These bat-friendly shelters help support urban biodiversity by offering resting spaces for the nocturnal creatures, contributing to a more balanced and vibrant city ecosystem.

Only in Bruges would they think to turn a water tower into a five-star hotel for swifts and bats—because who wouldn’t want to pay top Euro for a view from 40 meters? 🦇🏰 Just wait till the pigeons start applying for penthouses! 😂

Fancy a water tower makeover, eh? Nothing screams urban chic like high-rise bat condos and swift penthouses—who needs a trendy café when you’ve got nature’s own Airbnb 40 meters up? 🦇🏰

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing says “urban renewal” quite like 16 posh bird suites and a bat hotel perched precariously 40 meters up. Who needs a functioning water tower when you can have a feathered and furry penthouse? 🦇🏰
