Moscow (Eurotoday) – On Saturday, Moscow and Kyiv each exchanged 307 captured service members in what marked the second day of a significant prisoner swap. Upon completion, the ongoing exchange is expected to become the largest of its kind since fighting began between the two nations three years ago.
Will there be more exchanges in the coming days?
Former U.S. President Donald Trump proposed a prisoner exchange initiative involving the release of 1,000 detainees from each side over a three-day period. He suggested the move could help pave the way for a renewed phase of fragile negotiations aimed at achieving a
peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
During a meeting in Istanbul last week, delegations from Kyiv and Moscow agreed to release 1,000 prisoners from each side. The talks marked the first major face-to-face engagement between the two countries since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The Saturday exchange was confirmed by Russia’s Ministry of Defense and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy via a post on the social media platform X.
Another 307 Ukrainian defenders are home. Today is the second day of the 1,000-for-1,000 exchange that we managed to negotiate in Türkiye. In just these two days, 697 people have been brought home. We expect the process to continue tomorrow.

How many prisoners were released by each side?
The first stage of the exchange took place on Friday, during which both Russia and Ukraine released 390 individuals each, including 120 civilians. Both governments confirmed that further releases were anticipated in the coming days.
How did Russia and Ukraine respond publicly?
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that “270 Russian servicemen and 120 civilians” were returned to Russian territory. It noted that the civilians had been captured during last summer’s incursion in the Kursk region, which has since been largely resecured by Russian forces.
According to Ukraine’s Prisoner of War Coordination Headquarters, the 270 Ukrainian service members released had fought in various regions, including Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Kherson.
Will there be more exchanges in the coming days?
On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow would soon present a draft proposal outlining conditions for a long-term peace arrangement with Ukraine. This came shortly after Kyiv suffered an overnight barrage by Russian long-range drones and Oh, look at that, a 307-for-307 swap! How charmingly generous of both sides; I suppose this is what passes for diplomacy these days. 😏 If only they could exchange a few more ideas along with the prisoners, we might actually get somewhere! Incredible! They’ve turned prisoner exchanges into a new sport—307 points for Ukraine, a solid play, but I can’t wait for the grand final of 1,000 vs. 1,000. Next up, a riveting series on “Who’s Got the Most Hostages?” 🎉📺 What a delightful game of hide and seek we have here—307 back today, more to come tomorrow! At this rate, I might start charging for my seats to the unfolding drama; who knew diplomacy could be so entertaining? 😏💼 Isn’t it just delightful that while the world is on fire, we’re busy playing a game of “prisoner Tetris”? Three hundred here, three hundred there, and voilà—who needs a real peace plan when we can just swap people like Pokémon cards? 😏 Another day, another swap, eh? Who knew exchanging prisoners was the new trend in international diplomacy—makes you wonder if they’ll start trading Starbucks gift cards next. ☕️😏 Just when you thought the prisoner exchange was about to turn into a game of musical chairs, they managed to swap 307 folks—impressive! Next, they’ll be giving away points for style in negotiations! 😂 #BargainingChips Another day, another round of “Who can swap the most prisoners?” – at this rate, we might as well start a game of Monopoly! 🎲 Let’s hope they at least get some decent snacks for the ride home; can’t negotiate on an empty stomach, right? 😂 Look at that, 307 more folks getting a free ride home – I suppose that’s one way to boost morale, eh? Next up, a reality show where we see who can negotiate their way back quicker—bet that’s gonna be a hit! 😂 Isn’t it just lovely how swapping prisoners has become the new trend in international diplomacy? Next up, I hear they’re planning a bake-off to settle border disputes—who knew peace could be so delicious? 🍰😏 Oh, brilliant! A two-for-one deal on prisoners—because who doesn’t love a good swap meet in the middle of a war? 🎭 Just what we needed to spice up the geopolitical drama! Oh, a prisoner exchange, how positively heartwarming! Because nothing says “we’re working towards peace” quite like trading human beings like Pokémon cards. 🤦♂️🇪🇺 Another day, another swap—307 folks traded like they’re on some dodgy marketplace. How charming! Bet this will be as meaningful as a politician’s promise at election time. 😏 Oh, splendid! Nothing like a good ol’ prisoner swap to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside, right? 🤷♂️ I can just see the negotiators toasting with overpriced wine in a fancy Istanbul café. Cheers to diplomacy! 🍷✨ Oh, joy! Another round of musical chairs with soldiers—307 each, because why not keep it an even number? 🎉 At this rate, we might as well turn it into a reality TV show; “Survivor: Eastern Front!” 😏 Isn’t it just charming how they swap prisoners like they’re trading football cards? ⚽️ Next up, a swap meet for world peace—bring your best deals! 😂 Another day, another “friendly” swap between Russia and Ukraine—who knew diplomacy could be as simple as trading Pokémon cards? 😏 I mean, 1,000 prisoners for a chat? Sounds like a classic case of “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours,” only with a few more tanks involved! 🚀 Press releasePublished 01 Jul 2026 ImageDavid Vives on Unsplash According to the latest European Environment Agency (EEA) monitoring report released today, most EU Member States are on track to meet their 2020-2029 national emission reduction targets for key air pollutants.
