Antwerp (Eurotoday) – The historic Stuivenberg hospital buildings in Antwerp are experiencing a revival. Currently 40% occupied, the former medical site has been transformed into a vibrant community space. The area now hosts the Freinetschool Keerpunt (with 36 students), artist studios, shops, social initiatives, and more — all coordinated by Entrakt and supported by Alderman Patrick Janssens.
As reported by VRT News, since the start of 2024, the city of Antwerp has introduced a new vision for abandoned infrastructure. By opening up the old hospital buildings for temporary use by various groups, the city aims to inject new life into the area. Entrakt is leading this innovative redevelopment project.
The public is invited to explore the site freely over the weekend — whether they’re Antwerp locals or visitors. A range of new initiatives has moved into the old wings of the hospital buildings:
- A “free shop” where people can donate and pick up reusable goods.
- A veterinary clinic that caters to low-income individuals.
- A cozy coffee bar bringing entrepreneurial energy to the site.
- A multicultural world kitchen that fosters cross-cultural interaction.
- Studios for artists and a music center that support creative expression.
How is the former Antwerp hospital being reborn as a community hub?
The transformation of the hospital includes the Freinet school Keerpunt, which now operates out of the site, educating 36 students between the ages of 12 and 15. The school focuses on subjects like art, culture, and social awareness. Both students and teachers say the space suits their mission perfectly.
The school community is thriving in this unconventional environment and hopes to be part of the neighbourhood for the long term. The broader redevelopment project not only fills an otherwise empty space but also strengthens the local community by offering educational, social, creative, and entrepreneurial opportunities.
“This place is ideal for us,”
says Inge Buelens, a mentor at Freinetschool Keerpunt.
“We wanted a lively and ‘dirtier’ neighbourhood with a bit of an edge.”
Currently, with only 40% of the space in use, the site offers plenty of room for additional ideas and initiatives. Those interested in joining the project can visit Entrakt’s stand during the opening weekend to find out how to get involved.
The city is still developing long-term plans for the site. There’s discussion surrounding the possible removal of certain buildings to ensure the space remains dynamic and attractive. The ultimate goal is to retain the creative and community-centric atmosphere while tailoring the site to future needs.
“We want to breathe new life into the site, with attention to the neighbourhood and social added value,”
explains Patrick Janssens (Vooruit), Alderman for Housing and Urban Development.

Looks like the former hospital has gone from treating patients to hosting student art projects—who knew “healthcare” now meant “healthier communities”? 🤔 Let’s just hope the only thing they cure is boredom! 🏥✨

Oh great, just what we needed—a former hospital turned community space where the only thing more contagious than the joy of collaboration is the lingering smell of old bandages! 🎉😏

Just what Antwerp needed—a former hospital turned community space, because nothing screams ‘vibrant neighborhood’ like a place where people used to go to get their ailments treated! 🏥✨ Hope you’re ready to learn about art, culture, and social awareness from a school of 36 kids—talk about a jam-packed curriculum! 😆

Isn’t it just charming how they’ve turned a hospital into a community hub? Because, you know, nothing screams “vibrant neighborhood” quite like the echoes of past surgeries and the aroma of artisanal coffee ☕️! Talk about a ‘healing’ process, eh?

Just what we needed, a hospital-turned-community hub! Because who wouldn’t want to sip their cappuccino in a place where people used to get bandaged up? 😂 #healthcarewithasideofart
