Turnhout – At AZ Turnhout Hospital, oncology nurses went above and beyond to make a cancer patient’s dream come true by organizing a heartfelt wedding celebration right from her hospital room. The team coordinated everything from dress fittings to emotional send-offs, turning a day overshadowed by illness into one filled with love and joy.
“It was incredibly meaningful for us to be part of such an important moment,” said Ann Vanbel, Head Nurse of the oncology department. “We had a patient who had been with us for some time and had a strong wish to get married.”
The nursing team embraced the opportunity to make the day special, handling the preparations with compassion and enthusiasm. From taping the patient’s feeding tube to keep it hidden, to decorating her hospital room, every detail was taken into account to preserve the dignity and beauty of the occasion.
Since the patient was too weak to travel to a bridal shop, the nurses arranged for a dress fitting at the hospital. Mirrors were brought in, and staff from a local boutique came to the ward, allowing the bride-to-be to try on gowns and find the perfect one.
“When she came out of her room, beaming, we all felt it—this was going to be her day,” Vanbel recalled.
On the day of the wedding, the patient was picked up by a taxi and taken to the town hall where she exchanged vows, followed by a family meal. Later, she returned to the hospital, filled with gratitude and joy. “She had been practicing with the physiotherapist to stand tall,” Vanbel added. “We wanted her to live this moment to the fullest.”
Although there was some nervousness among the staff about how the day would unfold, the event turned out to be a joyous and uplifting occasion for everyone involved. After the celebration, the newlyweds returned to the ward and shared wedding photos and treats with the staff as a token of their appreciation.
The nurses at AZ Turnhout not only provided medical care but also created an environment filled with support and love, proving how deeply healthcare providers can impact the emotional well-being of their patients. By transforming the hospital into a place of celebration, they helped turn a challenging period into a cherished memory.
