Fire Destroys Veltem Scout Building; Lt. De Greef Takes Command

Veltem-Beisem (Eurotoday) – A fire that broke out around 22:40 on May 23, 2025, completely destroyed the Winksele-Veltem-Beisem scout building in Veltem. The building’s asbestos roof raised serious health concerns. Fire response was led by Lieutenant Johan De Greef. No injuries were reported.

According to VRT News, firefighters responded late Friday evening to reports of what was initially thought to be a grass fire in Veltem-Beisem, a village in the municipality of Herent, in the Flemish Brabant province of Belgium. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a scout facility engulfed in flames. The building’s remote location made access difficult for fire trucks, requiring firefighters to run hoses over a considerable distance to reach the site.

The fire was eventually brought under control. The fire brigade noted that the structure, which was old and constructed with highly flammable materials, was quickly consumed by the flames. Lieutenant Johan De Greef, leading the operation, stated that the building’s age and materials contributed to its total destruction during the intense blaze.

What caused the Veltem Scout building fire, and how will asbestos impact the area?

The fire not only destroyed the building but also raised environmental and health concerns due to the presence of asbestos in the roof. When the roof ignited, asbestos particles were released into the air, heightening the risk of exposure.

Fortunately, there was no wind at the time, which helped keep the contamination localized. Police quickly cordoned off the area to keep the public at a safe distance. Specialists will now assess the site and oversee the safe removal of asbestos particles to minimize health risks to the public.

Local authorities continue to evaluate the damage at the scout building site. The structure was actively used by the Winksele-Veltem-Beisem scout group, particularly by members aged 14 to 16. It served as a hub for meetings, activities, and storage of essential equipment and supplies—all of which were destroyed in the fire.

This incident represents a significant loss for the scout group, which is coping with the emotional and logistical impact. It marks the second time in as many years that the group has faced such devastation, as another facility they used was vandalized in 2024.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities are treating it as a serious matter and have brought in a fire expert to conduct a thorough investigation. Thankfully, the building was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries have been reported.

Well, nothing quite like a good ol’ fire to spark some “healthy” concerns about asbestos, eh? 🚒😅 I suppose the scouts can now bond over their shared love of the outdoors—just a tad more smoky than usual!

Looks like the scouts will need to swap their campfire songs for fire safety drills after this little bonfire turned into a full-on roast! If only they had a fire extinguisher as big as their sense of adventure! 🔥😂
