Blauwpoort Waregem 42ha Estate Opens After Two Decades of Protests

Waregem (Eurotoday) – The Blauwpoort industrial estate in Waregem, managed by Leiedal, covers 42 hectares, with 26 hectares designated for businesses and 16 hectares reserved for green space. A total of 80 companies have expressed interest, and 25 will be chosen based on job creation, environmental impact, and local connections. Mayor Kristof Chanterie confirmed that construction would begin in early 2026, with business buildings expected to be completed in 2027.

The Blauwpoort industrial estate in Waregem is moving forward after years of planning and delays. The project is being overseen by Leiedal, which owns the land. Companies interested in establishing themselves at the estate, named De Vlecht, can now apply for a spot. Construction is set to commence in early 2026.

The permit application for infrastructure works and landscaping will be finalized by the end of April 2025. Following this, landscaping and utility installations will be completed, allowing businesses to start constructing their buildings in 2027.

Which companies will join Waregem’s 42ha Blauwpoort estate?

The Blauwpoort industrial estate is a significant new development in Waregem, Belgium. It will occupy 42 hectares, with blank”>26 hectares allocated for businesses and 16 hectares designated as a green zone. The green space will include the historic gatehouse and remnants of the old farm’s ramparts.

Officials have noted that preserving these historical elements is a key aspect of the project, harmonizing heritage conservation with modern industrial development. The estate is strategically positioned near the E17 highway, ensuring convenient access for businesses. Blauwpoort is anticipated to be a major economic boost for Waregem, attracting new companies, generating jobs, and addressing environmental concerns.

Officials stated that interest in the site has been ongoing for two decades. Over the past year, 80 companies have expressed a desire to establish operations there. Leiedal, the organization responsible for the project, will reach out to interested companies while also accepting new applications. A selection committee will determine which companies will be granted access to Blauwpoort.

The selection process will prioritize job creation, environmental sustainability, and local connections. Companies with negative environmental impacts, such as slaughterhouses or soil processing facilities, will not be permitted. Additionally, office spaces and small businesses will not be included in the estate.

The Blauwpoort industrial estate is expected to accommodate approximately 25 companies, though the final number will depend on the space requirements of each business. Available plots range from 3,000 square meters to 3 hectares, allowing for a diverse mix of company sizes.

Most companies will have the opportunity to purchase their plots, though businesses situated near the highway will be required to lease their space. An informational meeting will be held at Waregem City Hall on Thursday, April 24, 2025, for those seeking more details.

Following the meeting, companies will be able to officially apply for a place in the Blauwpoort estate. The goal is to attract businesses that contribute to job creation and environmental sustainability, with high expectations for strong interest from potential applicants.
