Brussels – On Tuesday, the European Parliament and member states reached an agreement to implement a digital driving license across the European Union by the end of 2030.
This digital license, which will be available on mobile devices, will hold the same legal standing as traditional physical licenses, which users will still have the option to request.
Under the terms of the agreement, member states will mandate a medical examination or self-assessment screening for individuals seeking this new driving license.
The license will remain valid for a duration of 15 years before requiring renewal.
New drivers will face a probationary period of at least two years, coupled with stricter regulations and penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
In 2024, road accidents resulted in 19,800 fatalities across the European Union. Sweden and Denmark were noted for having the safest roads, while Bulgaria and Romania ranked at the bottom of the safety list. (March 25, 2025)
